How do you maintain an interest in a favorite classical work?

When you find a symphony, concerto or sonata that strikes your fancy, will you listen to it 10 or more times?

If so, how do you maintain your interest?

Does it simply become comfortable and predictable, or do you look for new things in that work to keep it fresh?

If so, what sort of new things would those be?

Just curious.

Avole, does any particular thing cause boredom to set in. Could you give an example?

I think I understand. For myself, I tend to listen to new recordings until I have them more or less memorized.

Study in scores or readings will send me back to listen for newly discovered things in those readings.

It's really just an extension of music playing habits into listening.

When I finally reach a saturation point, the sound just bounces off my head, almost without being heard.

I have to wonder how much longer this will work for me. I hope to continue to enjoy classical music for the duration.

Live performances were a regular feature of my life until this year. Lately, the only live music we hear is what we play at home. This is not going to change for the forseeable future, due to some unfortunate medical circumstances.

Hopefully, ways to keep what I do have access to fresh and inviting will make themselves apparent over time.
