Is the Wii all the excercise you need?!!

Posted by: Chillkram on 09 January 2008

I'm not one for computer games. I wasn't even interested in Space Invaders which was all the rage when I was a kid. I would always much rather be playing football or climbing trees. The kids have the usual computer games, Game Boys, PSPs etc. Not interested even remotely.

They got a Wii between them for Christmas and I had a go for the first time on Monday as I was intrigued by all the jumping around and arm swinging.

Bloody Hell! I was knackered after about 10 minutes of the boxing! I played for around an hour at the bowling, the baseball and the tennis.

This morning I ached like b***ery! All over.

I had another go this evening and again I'm knackered. I think I'll lose my Christmas pounds by the weekend at this rate.

As I said. I'm not a fan of computer games but this is good fun.

Anyone else had a go?

Oh yes Mark! no.1 son's got one of these.

Great fun - a damn sight better than your "normal" type computer game and far more understandable and accessible for us oldies! Big Grin

Oh b*gg*r.

I too have had zero interest in computer gaming over my too many years. But the prospect of physically interacting in the the way the Wii seems to had my interest piqued. I'm pretty keen on playing sport anyhow but this seemed like fun - and much warmer than going for a run !

Does it feel at all realistic in terms of playing? Suppose one best keep the curtains close or the neighbours will be sending the white van round.

Having no kids I'd have a hard time pretending I bought it for them as you have masterfully done Smile

Trouble is there are not enough hours already to listen to all the music I want too.

Ian

I am as yet a novice, but it does appear to respond to subleties such as putting topspin and pace on the ball when playing tennis. You also use the backhand to play and can bob and weave and throw an uppercut when boxing. You do have to get used to the timing which can feel a bit strange initially.

I wouldn't pretend it is a replacement for the real thing because it isn't. But it is good when it's raining outside and you want a bit of exercise with some sense of purpose or fun.

Mark (Still exploring the possibilities)

ps I whipped my thirteen year old daughter!

Oi! Who said 'Competitive dad'?!!

Girls can't play computer games.

There is nothing more humbling than getting destroyed by some 12 year old kid on unreal Tournament.

There is a keep fit game coming to Wii in the near future. Smile

I couldn't believe how sore my wrist was after 10 pin bowling on the Wii.

GPs are dishing these out on the NHS for the obese ones I have heard . . .

I have played on one, actually quite fun.

Get a lighter ball!

I was always anti games consoles, certainly in my own lounge, but my 25 year old son, who shares our rather bijou (ie small!) 2 bedroomed flat, managed to buy 3 Wiis online one night when slightly the worse for wear. He has now sold 2 but the third is happily esconced next to the Panasonic plasma and gets a lot of use! The most fun you can have at home whilst dressed (although I guess clothing is optional!).

How many competitive dads are out there?!!

Wii arrived today - after scouring the net for one not at inflated prices.

Very tidy unit, easily disguised, plenty of WAF points there. The graphics are not up to modern standard but the games are a lot of fun. As Mark mentioned above the boxing is quite involving and fun.

Now where can I rent a child to beat up? I know! - my neighbour is 35 and will love it.

Next step must be a good rally driving game for the Mrs.

If you can wait a few months Ian - Mario Kart for the wii will be out - info here.

Up to 12 players on-line (a first for Mario Kart) another first is the availability of bikes!

Should prove to be the most fun on two or four wheels in a while - just watch out for those red or, even worse blue, shells.......

Cheers,
Ali

So is Mario Kart a good thing then - I know zero about this stuff.

Hi Ian, your up late, for a school night....

Mario Kart was, and probably will be the biggest thing Nintendo did, starting way back from it's humble 2D beginnings on the NES.

I first played in on the SuperNES, and thought the N64 version was the best multi-player game there was (closely followed by Goldeneye). So, yeah, it's got quite a mantle to fill and the new features that are being promised for the wii version make it even more palm sweating stuff!!!

Ok, so I'm a big kid really.......I recently bought a Nintendo DS while in Malaysia last month and have hardly put it down - playing Mario Kart (funnily enough), Zelda, and a few others.......haven't gotten round to training my brain yet though as I'm not sure it could handle it..... Razz

Cheers,
Ali

Confession:
I once decided on a day off that I would ride a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
I set up my turbo trainer (the cyclists will understand) in front of the TV to follow the 8 hour stage on Eurosport. Food, drinks etc. all around me. A fan to keep cool and off I jolly well went...About 3 hours into it there's a whistling at the window...

Bloody window cleaner still gives me grief 4 years later about the sweat sodden purple faced lycra clad plonker 'cycling round the bloody living room'
Anyone know a good window cleaner?

If anyone has an import Wii Fit already, could they get in contact (email in my profile)? They are out in Japan but Brits have to wait until June, although you'd think our need would be greater. I'm interested in a professional capacity.

Nintendo have never beaten the original mariokart, the 64 version was shite in comparison.
Posted on: 06 February 2008 by arf005
Each to their own I guess, I thought the N64 version was great......but then maybe I'm just showing my age!
Posted on: 06 February 2008 by garyi
Na mariokart on the original snes was just super, lovely responsive and simple controls meant that the skill of the game was totally down to the person playing led to real competition in my household. The 64 version was just another wolly controlled car game.
Posted on: 08 February 2008 by Stephen Tate
I agree with Garyi, the snes kart is the best kart racer ninty have ever executed. Game play not graphics.

Same as, i think WII is the best console ninty have ever excecuted, game play not graphics!

No, the BMJ had a report on calories used and they are not many. They did say that they thought the Wii was better than nothing and was at least a pointer to get kids to actually go out and play 'real' games.

BMJ Website is playing up tonight but some details are Here
