XPS2 for CDS2...?

Posted by: jpk73 on 22 April 2003

Hi!

I bought my XPS1 only a couple of months ago...

1.) Is there a special upgrade offer for those who have just bought an XPS1?

2.) Is the difference between XPS1 and XPS2 bigger than between CDPS and XPS1? What is the improvement like?

3.) Can I have the XPS2 in my existing XPS1-olive-case?

4.) Do I need a custom wired Brundy between CDS2 and XPS2?

Your advice is appreciated! - Jun

Jun, I was delighted with the XPS2 on the CDS2, the Burndy will work fine. Basically the sound is more relaxed to listen to but more informative, more detail is revealed> It is a very big upgrade in my view. regards, Dev

I too would like answers to these questions, like youself I purchased an XPS to replace my CDPS about 10 months ago

However what I would like clarified is the contribution the new Super Burndy introduced on the XPS2 makes to this upgrade as his can be purchased separately, I wonder if Naim can chip in on this.

Jun & Bosh,

the new XPS2 cannot be made in an olive fascia style case. Also, because of the extensive changes (such as the new transformer) made to the XPS2, it's unlikely that we will be able to upgrade existing XPS units, at least not in any economically viable manner.

The old XPS Burndy can be used with the XPS2 and the new S-XPS BUrndy can be used with the old XPS. The new S-XPS Burndy is an upgrade over the old one as it achieves a better separation from interference between the digital and analog supplies.

Richard

It was said by Naim that 70% of the CDPS to XPS upgrade came from the black Burndy. Is the same true of the XPS2/S-XPS burndy improvement over XPS1

Hi Jun,

I'm a little bit confused by your post. The XPS2 has been available for quite some time now, at least 4 or 5 months as it was released with the initial launch of the new range. There was no special upgrade scheme at the time of launch and we haven't introduced one recently. For the last 5 or 6 months we have been able to supply the old olive fascia equipment to special order alongside the new range for those customers who wished to maintain a cosmetic match with their current system.

If you bought your XPS a couple of months ago then the XPS2 was available as well and had been so for at least a few months. Are you saying you ordered an XPS in error? If so, I would take this matter up with your dealer at the earliest opportunity.

Bosh,

with the standard Burndy, the improvement offered by the XPS2 over the XPS is marked, evidenced by the many posts from other members on this forum who have already done the comparison. The S-XPS Burndy can be considered icing on the cake...

As always, listen for yourself and then decide.

I purchased an XPS2 to replace a CDPS with modified burndy about five weeks ago as an upgrade to my CDS2.. with a view to a possible further upgrade to CDS3 in due course.

It is a very significant upgrade giving a far greater insight and depth into the music.

My question is Richard.. is the S-XPS burndy supplied as standard... mine as supplied is labelled NA XPS-46.

Many thanks for the clarification

I'm a little confused as to why a new transformer (presumably better) has been used in the XPS2 whereas the Supercap has not been upgraded in a similar way.

My understanding was that the transformer's in the SUpercap and XPS were the same (they certainly look the same in mine, in fact the XPS transformer has a supercap label on it), in which case you would have expected a change that has a 'significant' positive affect on the XPS2 would similarly benefit the SUpercap.

Greeny,

take a look at my comments on this earlier thread: http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=48019385&m=5511912516&r=3711962516#3711962516

The fact that the new XPS2 transformer has been optimised for it's role in powering the CD players has meant that it is unsuitable for use in the Supercap.

With regard to the S-XPS Burndy, it is currently being supplied as standard with the XPS2.

The XPS2, quite apart from the new feet and casework which contribute to reducing microphony, uses a new toroidial transformer optimised for use as a power supply to our CDX/CDX2/CDS2/CDS3 players. Subjective tests seem to bear this out....

Ok Thanks Richard, I missed that One.
