How much hum from phono?

I recently bought a Rega P3 which is excellent. It is linked to a stageline (+flatcap) and NAC112/NAP150. If I unplug the turntable and turn the volume up full, there is no hum. But when plugged in, some hum comes through at top volume. I have also noticed that the hum gets worse as the arm crosses the platter, and when the turntable motor is switched on. Should I expect this?

This is a common problem with the rega. It's worse with Grado's and Rega's own cartridges, due to lack of shielding on them, but there will probably be a small amount of hum with any MM cartridge. An MC cart will cure it.

Cheers,
Paul.

Check the ground lead is not causing the problem, by simply moving it about you may here the hum alter. If this is the case investigate further i.e. check connections and proximity to other pieces of equipment. This is a problem I sometimes get if the wife has been dusting and moved things around.
Also the actual arm lead is microphonic and can create a hum dependant on what other leads or even parts of the stand it is touching.
