Whar is your favourite song lyric?
Posted by: erik scothron on 14 February 2006
Not necessarily your favourite song but the best lyric as poetry say, something that can be enjoyed on it's own without music.
To kick off: The year of the cat - by Al Stewart
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress
running like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow
'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls
near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says,
I feel my life Just like a river running thru
The year of the cat
Well, she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat
Well, morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away the choice
and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

"I misunderstood" was the song I heard on the radio that got me into Richard Thompson. There are really some tour de forces in his cannon - Vincet Black Lightening nearly made a fat 40 year old get up on a motorbike for the first time but thankfully sense prevailed! (or was prevailed upon)

"Fruit Tree" by Nick Drake, with the line:
Fame is but a fruit tree
so very unsound
it can never flourish
till its stalk is in the ground
So sad and true of his life.
Billy Bragg has also delivered some blinders over the years. "Tank Park Salute" is almost impossible to listen to without missing my father.

Nobody loves you when you're down and out
Nobody sees you when you're on cloud nine
Everybody's hustlin' for a buck and a dime
I'll scratch your back and you scratch mine
I've been across to the other side
I've shown you everything, I got nothing to hide
And still you ask me do I love you, what it is, what it is
All I can tell you is it's all show biz
All I can tell you is it's all show biz
Nobody loves you when you're down and out
Nobody knows you when you're on cloud nine
Everybody's hustlin' for a buck and a dime
I'll scratch your back and you knife mine
I've been across the water now so many times
I've seen the one eyed witchdoctor leading the blind
And still you ask me do I love you, what you say, what you say
Everytime I put my finger on it, it slips away
Everytime I put my finger on it, it slips away
Well I get up in the morning and I'm looking in the mirror to see, ooo wee!
Then I'm lying in the darkness and I know I can't get to sleep, ooo wee!
Nobody loves you when you're old and grey
Nobody needs you when you're upside down
Everybody's hollerin' 'bout their own birthday
Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground
Also one that brings a lump to the throat is the first line of the latest robbie williams song.
" Theres no earthly way of knowing what was in your heart when it stopped going "

Now I've got a sink where I always wash my cup,
And I've got a sink where I throw up,
There I wash my hair and there I brush my teeth,
And there a little spider came to grief.
You may think I am rotten and say that I'm a ponce,
But I ran the water really hot, and burned him on the bonce,
He got his little legs and wrapped them round his head,
To all intents and purposes, I thought that he was dead,
So I splashed him with listermint, flushed him down the drain,
Half an hour later, he was sitting there again!
Where did he go you have a right to ask,
Did he sit beneath the plughole with a snorkel and a mask,
When I turned the tap on, sensing death,
Did the little spider hold his breath.
Did he have an aqualung, and flippers on his feet,
Someone must have noticed when he fell out in the street,
Did he wrap his legs round the bottom of the plug,
And sit there as the water went "glug glug glug.."
Here's two questions, how come he never drowned,
And can you tell me how the little 'kers still around,

When I was about 16 it was the Beatles' Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye I thought it was hilarious and so absurd. but then what do you expect from a 16 year old with raging hormones?

I have always though Labi Siffre's lyrics below were deeply moving and relevant to their cause -
The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The further you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me
You can decide to turn your face away
No matter 'cause there's
Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone... oh no
There's something inside so strong
Something inside so strong
The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time
You squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly it will blind you
Because there's
Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone... oh no
There's something inside so strong
Something inside so strong
Brothers and sisters
When they insist we're just not good enough
Well, we know better
Just look 'em in the eyes and say
We're gonna do it anyway
We're gonna do it anyway
because there's
Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Though you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone... oh no
There's something inside so strong

Another similar track that stands out from Seal(Bird of Freedom), its one of my fave Seal tracks -
Brother...
You can't lose that feeling,
You can't give your life away.
Like a bird of freedom,
You ain't got no dues to pay.
'Cause they need you bad,
...need you bad...
For what they never had.
...never had...
I want you to know,
...you to know...
That it's alright to flow.
...alright to flow...
Yes it alright brother.
....ooooh-oooh
Yes it alright
No-nooo.
Let your love shine brightly,
Let it burn right through my veins.
Brother...
Like that bird of freedom,
You ain't got no blues today.
Brother...
'Cause they need you bad,
For what they never had, brother.
...never had...
I want you to know,
...you to know...
That it's alright to flow.
...alright to flow...
Baby.
Away from everywhere.
Ooo, can't you see that they want ya,
They need ya, so bad baby.
For what they never had, now.
...never had...
I want you to know,
...you to know...
That it's alright,
...alright...
No it's alright,
Alright to flow.
Alright...
Oh brother, my brother.
Away from everywhere, no na na na.
Why would I stop you?
Why would I lie?
Why would I break this feeling?
When we're almost there.
Away from everywhere.
'Cause I wouldn't do this
Lord if I tried.
Why would I break this feeling?
When we're almost there.
Away from everywhere.
'Cause not in a million,
Lord if I tried.
Why can't I have you near me?
When we're almost there.
Away from everywhere.
Take to the skies and fly.....
....Why can't we have this feeling?
Take to the skies and fly.....
....Why must we stop this feeling?
...oooohh...
Brother...
You can't lose that feeling,
You can't give your life away.
Like a bird of freedom,
You ain't got no dues to pay.
'Cause they need you bad,

Soppy lyrics....classic bonnie Raitt
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't
Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't

And a bit of hip hop - Tupac - changes
I see no changes all I see is racist faces
misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under I wonder what it takes to make this
one better place, let's erase the wasted
Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right
'cause both black and white is smokin' crack tonight
and only time we chill is when we kill each other
it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other
And although it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready, to see a black President, uhh
It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact
Twista - Hope
And over day it was definately how devil took that ride, And I
wish that God can protect us from the wrongs so that all the soldiers that were sent overseas come home, And uh
We will never break, though they devestate, we shall motivate,
And we gotta pray, all we got is faith.
Instead of thinking about who gonna die to day,
The Lord is gonna help you feel better, so you ain’t gotta cry today.
Sit at the light so long,
And then we gotta move straight forward, cuz we fight so strong,
So when right go wrong,
Just say a little prayer, get ya money man, life goes on
Let’s HOPE!
CHORUS (Faith Evans)
Cuz I’m hopeful, yes I am, hopeful for today,
Take this music and use it
Let it take you away,
And be hopeful, hopeful and he’ll make a way
I know it ain’t easy but that’s okay.
Cuz we hopeful!
And some classic Marvin -
Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Yah
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
(Background music and conversation)
In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on
Mother, Mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me,
So you can see
Oh, what's going on

1. Anything by Cole Porter.
2. The opening line from Do The Du (Casse) by A Certain Ratio: "My heart was just an open sore/Which you picked at 'til it was raw"
More when I can think of 'em

As Alan Partidge would say, lovely stuff!

I thought perhaps a religious song was in order, so here's one from Jake Thackery
Oh, Sister Josephine
What do all these policemen mean
By coming to the convent in a grim limousine
After Sister Josephine?
While you, Sister Josephine
You sit with your boots up on the altar screen
You smoke one last cigar
What a funny nun you are
The policemen say that Josephine's a burglar in disguise
Big bad Norman - fifteen years on the run
The sisters disbelieve it: No, that can't be Josephine
Just think about her tenderness towards the younger nuns
Oh, Sister Josephine
They're searching the chapel where you've been seen
The nooks and the crannies of the nun's canteen
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
You sip one farewell Benedictine
Before your au revoir
A right funny nun you are
Admittedly her hands are big and hairy
And embellished with a curious tattoo
Admittedly her voice is on the deep side
And she seems to shave more often than the other sisters do
Oh, Sister Josephine
Founder of the convent pontoon team
They're looking through your bundles of rare magazines
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
You give a goodbye sniff of benzedrine
To the convent budgerigar
A bloody funny nun you are
No longer will her snores ring through the chapel during prayers
Nor her lustful moanings fill the stilly night
No more empty bottles of altar wine come clunking from her cell
No longer will the cloister toilet seat stand upright
Oh, Sister Josephine
Slipping through their fingers like vaseline
Leaving them to clutch your empty crinoline
After Sister Josephine
While you, Sister Josephine
Sprinting through the suburbs when last seen
Dressed only in your wimple and your rosary
A right funny nun you seem to be
Oh, Sister Josephine

"Still I sent up my prayer
Wondering where it had to go
With heaven full of astronauts
And the lord on death row
While the millions of his lost and lonely ones
Cali out and clamour to be found
Caught in their struggle for higher positions
And their search for love that sticks around"
Lots of great lyrics out there, but this from Joni (covered brilliantly by Gregson & Collister) sticks in my head for some strange reason.
Also, from Gram Parsons:
"Well, the first time I lose I drink whiskey
Second time I lose I drink gin
Third time I lose I drink anything
'cause I think I'm gonna win
Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain't no place for a poor boy like me
Ooh, Las Vegas
Ain't no place for a poor boy like me
Every time I hit your crystal city you know
You're gonna make a wreck outta me "
Wondering where it had to go
With heaven full of astronauts
And the lord on death row
While the millions of his lost and lonely ones
Cali out and clamour to be found
Caught in their struggle for higher positions
And their search for love that sticks around"

Hi Bruce,
I believe someone else posted the exact same 'unrequited' lyric earlier in this thread - I remember becasue the verse impressed me. I've never heard the song but agree with your evaluation.
Regards,
Erik

Here's mine
Van Morrison = Brown eyed girl
Hey where did we go,
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow,
Playin' a new game,
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.
Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing,
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and sliding
All along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl,
You my brown eyed girl.
Do you remember when we used to sing,
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
So hard to find my way,
Now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My how you have grown,
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You my brown eyed girl
Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da.

"No comedians"
..by the great lyricist Shaun Ryder, at the start of one of the songs on the Happy Mondays 'Bummed' album - and seemingly completely unrelated to the rest of the song...

More Billy Bragg
I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them, but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware

The heartbreaking 'inwardness' of Hank Williams' 'I can't escape from you' has haunted me for 30 odd years.
I've tried and tried to run and hide
To find a life that's new
But where I go, I always know
I can't escape from you.
A jug of wine to numb my mind
But what good does it do
The jug runs dry and still I cry
I can't escape from you.
These wasted tears are souvenirs
Of a love I thought was true
Your memory is chained to me
I can't escape from you.
There is no end, I can't pretend
That dreams will soon come true
A slave too long to a heart of stone
I can't escape from you.
Honest, succinct and very poignant
I've tried and tried to run and hide
To find a life that's new
But where I go, I always know
I can't escape from you.
A jug of wine to numb my mind
But what good does it do
The jug runs dry and still I cry
I can't escape from you.

I can't escape from you.

A slave too long to a heart of stone
I can't escape from you.

The screen door slams
Mary' dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold
Thunder Road
Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind so Mary climb in
It's town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win
The Boss
I came across this thread and this was the first thing I thought of (but you beat me to it). Fantastic lyrics.

This resonates with me and I am sure with many who have been there and bought the t shirt. The art of the good poem/lyric is to say the maximum with the minimum and still hit the spot which this song does, as you say, poignantly.
