n-Sub with n-Vi?

Hi,

The FAQ has a section on n-Sub with n-Vi but doesn't really answer the one question I have Smile

If you want to have the signal routed to the n-Sub from CD, so the internal player, how would yu have to connect the n-sub? Could you use the LFE plus BassMix? Or would it work if the speakers are set to small?

On the AV2 nothing would help as long as you use direct mode. Only hi-level works.

But the n-Vi doesn't offer direct vs. stereo. So is there a lo-level connection/setup that would work?

From what I recall, it depends on how you have your speaker settings configured. It's been a while since I played with an n-Vi but have you tried setting the main speakers to "small"? It's a compromise though. Best would probably to stick with "large" and have a separate hi-level connection from the back of your speakers to cover using the Sub for 2 channel replay.

Hi Richard,
My n-Vi hasn't arrived yet, but I thought I'd sort out what I need so I can get the cable in place.

Thing is, that with my dvd5/av2 I think in "Direct" mode not even with speakers set to small the sub would get a signal. "Direct" would be completely pure.

Unfortunately I don't know whether the n-Vi uses this "direct" mode or uses the digitally altered "stereo" mode.

But if I wanted to use the Hi-Level, I would either need two n-Subs or would have to hope that enough bass is played through the speaker I chose.

I have two subs (one left, one right) in my main system, but won't add two to my second system Smile

It wouldn't be the end of the world to set the speakers to "small", but IF routing to the small speakers would work, then in theory wouldn't BassMix work as well?

Alex - i found with my n-Vi that in 5.1 mode, using the low level input worked fine, i just didn't get on with using the n-Vi providing bass mix in 2 channel mode. It never really integrated properly and i got far better results with music using (as Richard suggests) the high level inputs of the n-Sub.

5.1 wouldn't be a problem. Nor the digital inputs. But the analogue inputs might be.
According to the manual no analogue input supports any processing modes (DTS:Neo, Pro Logic etc.), which I still find weird.

And by that logic it would seem logical to assume, that BassMix will not work on analogue sources. I think the CD is an analogue source (although it is not Big Grin ).

What I did just see though is that instead of connecting to the hi-level of the speakers, I could connect to the analogue out of the n-Vi.

Am I correct in assuming that I could hook up the lo-level input of my n-Sub to the analogue output of the n-Vi?
If so, would it be possible to use a Y-cable to convert the DIN-stereo-signal to a mono signal so the sub gets left and right channel information?
Or would that result in some kind of short-circuit and damage the n-Vi?

Nope - its digital stereo (internal CD player)so bass mix will work if you select that and have the sub connected to the subwoofer RCA socket on the back of the n-Vi.

You could do this. No need to mono the signal - the sub has left and right low level inputs so will do the summation itself.

Thanks for that info!
I am still waiting for the NACA5 to hook up my center (will be running a 3.1 in my study) so I was not able to select any other modes. Thought it was because of the input. But Naim's mono is only center-mono, not mono-left.

Think I will use BassMix then. That way the n-Sats can stay set to large and the n-Sub will be set to 60Hz.
