British Gas Smart Energy metre and Naim amps

Posted by: Alonso on 15 February 2010

Its going to be really interesting.

SO and myself have had long discussions about monetary impact of my leaving my XS amp on 24/7

This will be quite interesting I imagine

We recently transferred all our power supplies to British Gas, as they were actually the cheapest by a fair margin.

The 'Energy Meter' should be arriving in the next month or so... I am also rather interested to see the kind of consumption it shows up for the system!

The person from BG said 'you can play games as a family to get your consumption to the lowest possible level'. My response? Life's too short...

I pay my gas bill in return for gas; I pay my phone bill in return for calls; I pay my electric bill in return for electicity; I pay my council tax for god knows what ... I for sure don't and it is by far and away the most expensive. I'd vote for anybody who would reduce the cost of the council. The council get my vote for the biggest money grabbing bandits: the lot around here make 'investment bankers' look good value for money.

Perhaps we should deregulate the county boundaries so that if Glos is too expensive you could opt out and join Hererfordshire!

Great idea! I would see this being a great way forward in encouraging competition between the currernt monopoly of masonic crookery that passes for local government, thus resulting in it disappearing altogether for the general good!

Great idea - I live in a non-existant county: it is not even proper Glos - I voted no thanks when asked - they already had the old county offices, but they built another lot for the newly renamed council - funny handshakes all round.

When it comes to wasting your money your local council are complete amateurs. You need national governments or even better unaccountable supra-national organisations to make a proper job of it.....

Along with energy meters I have come across this (link deleted)
Apparently it can save you money and supply the correct voltage to UK mains components. I kind of think that it is a glorified mains conditioner. What are your thoughts??

I would not worry about consumption regarding your naim HIFI being left on 24/7, it uses nothing in real terms...I suspect this gizmo will mess up the sound too.

I could understand if you were running a hydroponic garden or underfloor heating or something...sorry, i just cannot understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to saving energy with a naim Hifi.
IMHO of course.

Does running a Nait XS on gas rather than electric improve the sound quality?

Well, it won't add more "air" to the soundstage.

To get back to a sensible level discussion on the gadget meters

My son has one; I checked its reading against my professional grade VAO meter & found it was up to 10% out.
Its reasonably accurate on a resistive load such as an incandescent or halogen lamps
10% (aprx) off with "energy" saver CFL types.
5% to 8% off with various items in his pile of entertainment boxes - TV, sky, hifi, games.
I think the measage is don't take them too seriously, but if it used as a comparative indicator, or gets the kids to turn stuff off - OK.
Then we can save enough to leave the Naim's on Winker

To get back to un-sensible
Brit Gas - lowest of the low, customers ?? who are they ??
& why do they phone every friggin' Friday evening just as I am sitting down for dinner, what part of F.OFF don't they understand.
