IXO5
Posted by: Gromit on 01 January 2003
I have been hearing conflicting news but is Naim going to ever produce the IXO5? Seems to have died a quiet death. Some of the manuals even refer to it (Connections guide) and others do not seem to mention it at all. Or is the party line now "everyone passive upgrade until the top, then move over to active!"
Anyone has other news or opinions?

I think the IXO was a bit of a blind alley for Naim. It was basically designed for the Credo and this is now defunct. The better Naim speakers need a better item such as a SNAXO, using an IXO with SBL's etc gave no advantage for active when I heard it.
This does not always mean you have to go active 'at the top'. Lots of posts recently about just this.

We did not make this product,we cannot comment further as we have not seen the unit. It should not be sold as a Naim unit, we will be chatting to our friends.

I used to use a cdi/92/flatcap/ixo/140s/intros and then sbls...
At the so called low-end don't bother with the snaxo/hicap unless its for keeps, you'll never hear what its capable of until you reach the cds/82 type arena.
Anyway having lived with both go for an IXO to start with...

I posed this question to myself after reading the posts here. In case anyone wonders, I have gone up the passive ladder to CDS1/ 102/ NAPSC/ HC/ 250/ SBL. Guess i could have gone all the way but started wondering if it could all be different. I mean, if the school of thought within Naim was that active was always going to be better, will it not make more sense for me to go active as soon as I can, (CD5/ FC2/ 112/ 150/ 150/ IXO/ SBL) then upgrade actively. Would it not bring me closer to the Naim ideal albiet at a lower level?

I have had active 150's since September. I started with an ixo and WOW was it great! I noticed more detail, greater speed and precision, and improved bass. I was using Intros at the time. In November, a s/h hi-cap and a snaxo became available, and I bought them. The improvements(more of the above plus greater ease, smoothness, refinement) were easily heard through the Intros. With SBL's....well you can imagine!
The CD5/FC2 will sound great (give you chills, make you cry) through active 150's with ixo or snaxo! Be carefull tho' you'll start wanting more.
