250/NBL v 300/SL2
Posted by: NB on 25 February 2003
Having heard and been impressed by the new SL2's at the Bristol Hi-fi show and having read the reviews of the 250 and 300 in this months hi-fi+ leads me to ask the question which would be the better combo? The SL2's being driven by a 300 or the NBL's driven by the 250.
My only critism of the SL2's would be they are a little bass light. However if I wanted to move up to the NBL's I would have to sacrifice the 300 for the 250.
Any advice would be appreciated,
Regards

Nb,
I believe Derek from New Audio Frontiers also handles Shahinians - as this is Loughborough based I think that counts as Leicester...
Maybe give him a call...
Hope that helps,

What about Mezzo Utopia. The Mezzo is replaced now by the new range - Alto, which means you can find s/h, ex-dem. or even new speakers for the amount you are ready to spend.
With 252/300 and dedicated spur(s) you will have everything you want.

Emil, sorry have never heard about Mezzo, tell me more.
I am interested in the Shahinian's though. I heard a pair many years ago at a HI-fi show and from memory they sounded good. I don't know much about the Shahinian's range though.

NB.
When checking out some of the alturnatives mentioned already, please make sure you have the chance to listen at home with the CDS/3/252/Super/300 combo - it is the only way to be certain it's right for you.
I'm not sure about Mezzo, but I know Derek at New Audio Frontiers should be able to let you listen to the Shahinians!

Alan,
I look forward to seeing you how you got on with the Utopia's over the weekend.
I havn't heard the Utopia's but have heard other JMlab speakers. Can't remember which model. They sounded pretty good to me, but lacked the clarity of the SL2's.
How are getting on with your choice of speakers?
regards,

OK, you will do the demo with the Mezzo.
The Utopia range is far away from the other JMLab ranges: new Electra, Cobalt etc.
Peter Swain made a good point: make sure you are connecting the speakers to high level Naim system. Nothing less than mine: CDX2/XPS2/282/hcII/n250 on fraim with a single 4mm2 spur.
I hope the Mezzo you will demo is not new. The speaker has excellent 8mm2 internal wire, which has to burn in.
They have good bass /11" driver/, but they are not boomy even in small rooms!
Pls, contact me, if you need more inf.
Nice to have your comments after the demo.

Thick woolly bass is no good. I have heard Jmlab speakers before and that was my impression of them. Ok they were not the Utopia's but something similar.
I was checking the speck's of my Ruark Equinox's and they cut off at 45Hz which doesn't appear that deep at first but in reality the bass powers out and you can feel it in the pit of your stomach. I am not a great expert on frequencies but I assume the lower the cut of point the deeper the bass or is it not as simple as that.

Jonas,
I was very impressed with the SL2's and they are top of the want list at the moment. My only concearn with them was that they lacked a little depth in the bass.
However I did hear them with a 250 and moving uo to the 300 may cure this.

Jonas,
I would be interested to know if you compared the SL2's against anything else when you purchased them or whether you went straight for the SL2's?

Nick,
Hows that 300 sounding now you have had chance to run it in?
I read your original review on the 300 and was a little concearned on what I was reading.
Now you have had chance to have a good listen is it a step forward form the 135's or is it a step sideways?
Would be interested to hear what you think of the bass depth of the 300, has the 300 got what it takes to really move air?
Regards

Tom,
I would consider selling the wife and the kids if I thought I could get enough for an active 300 system. Think of all that extra listening time I would have!!

I have noticed though, that with no music on and the volume at 0 there is a sound which makes me think that it needs earthing? any ideas please.
michela,
If you mean that you're getting some hiss through the speakers, then this is normal.

Yes. The noise is comming from treble and
mid driver, not from the bass.

I still reckon a CDS3/552/active 300/SL2 should sound just about ok

I reckon a third 300 and a pair of NBL's would do the trick

Whats the best way to site a NAP 300. Is it best on two single fraim layers or together on the larger Fraim shelf?
At the moment I have my CDX sitting on top of the XPS again is it better to have these on seperate shelves?

Nick,
So what is going to be the best way to site a CDS3 XPS 252 Super 300.
Presumably CDS3 252 super XPS with the 300 on the bottom. Is there going to be a better way?
I have to admit my cabling is a mess at the moment its all lumped behind the Fraim.I am going to have to spend an evening sorting it out.
For what its worth NB is short for Nigel Ball. No relation to Alan by the way. NB is a very old Nickname from my student days. You know us students, just lazy!!
