250/NBL v 300/SL2
Posted by: NB on 25 February 2003
Having heard and been impressed by the new SL2's at the Bristol Hi-fi show and having read the reviews of the 250 and 300 in this months hi-fi+ leads me to ask the question which would be the better combo? The SL2's being driven by a 300 or the NBL's driven by the 250.
My only critism of the SL2's would be they are a little bass light. However if I wanted to move up to the NBL's I would have to sacrifice the 300 for the 250.
Any advice would be appreciated,

NB,
if you buy a base level instead of an upper level it will cost approx £200 more.
Other than this, the same number of levels are reqd.
cheers, Martin

Martin,
Yes true but then I would have to buy a further two shelves for my Xerxes and power supplies. The only place I could put the new tower is where my old turntable support is.
Does anyone know if the Fraim works well with Xerxes turntables?

I have just seen a good deal on Naim DBL's, are these going to be too much for my listening room which is 20 foot by 20 foot and will they sound good on the end of a 252/Super/300?

I have heard dbl's sound good in rooms much smaller than 20 by 20. Although a 552 would be ideal

I think dbl's would do very well on the end of your electronics. A 252 is better than a 52 which was the best thing for dbl's upto last year.
Also a single 300 is comparible to two 135's and is in a different league to a single 250 which is the very bottom end of what is considered capable. If you have the space I think this could be a big smiles upgrade.

My dealer suggested I get a dedicated TT shelf rather than put it on top of my 6 shelf Fraim I bought from him. Said they work better. I still haven't done it as the heavy table next to my system seems to work fine, and more convenient.

Wolf,
I had my TT on a dedicated stand in my last house. It worked very well. Sadly I havn't got enough room in my current house for a third stand.

space can easily be a problem with this stuff

Stuart,
I was never a fan of the old sbl's. I found them a little too forward and agressive. Having heard the new SL2's I think they are completely different to the SBL's. They are more relaxed, more transparent and have a greater range then the SBL's.
I agree with your comments on the new 300 though. I intend keeping my new 300 for many years to come.

Stuart,
May I ask what you have used to connect your Xerxes to your 252?
Have you auditoned an ArtaXerxes?

I am going to get a home dem of the SL2's soon. I originally heard them at the Bristol Hi-fi show where they were on the end of a CDS3/XPS2 252/super/250 and they sounded wonderful. One of the best sistems I have ever heard.
The only competition is the NBL's but i am not sure my budget can strech that far,
