cartridge advise?

Posted by: gusi on 11 July 2002

Hello All,

I am now the new owner of a LP12/valhalla/black ittok (big grin)

What would be a suitable cartridge? It has to sound better than my old Axis and at least similar to the CDX. Currently it has a Goldring 1042

My budget is about 200ukp.

I heard that retipped troikas and karmas would do the trick but looking through the forum they may fall well outside the budget.

Does expert stylus have a website? Any other suppliers/suggestions?

thanks
Gus

Gus,
I'm in a similar situation to yourself looking for a new cartridge around 200-300GBP. Some searches on this forum came up with the following suggestions as a starting point -

Dynavector 10x4 Mk2 (£199)or 20X/H (£299), MCH
Clearaudio Aurum Beta (£?)or Beta-S (£270), MM
Goldring 1042 (£150), MM
Linn Adikt (£195), MM
Rega Super Elys (£150) MM
Goldring Eroica H (£140), MCH

Those marked MCH are high output moving coil as I don't have MC boards in my Nait3, the others are moving magnet types.

Of these the 10x4 and Aurum Beta seem to be most favoured, particularly with the Ittok. The Linn Adikt is new (out in June) but I believe Andrew Randle who contributes to this forum may have some experience of it. If he reads this perhaps he'll tell us. Hope this helps

Hi Guys,

How do people feel about the relative merits of investing say ca. 400UK in a rebuilt Troika/Karma compared to what that would buy you new? BTW the Ittok in question here is a black LVII,-don't know if that makes any difference people reckoning (apparently they are superior?).

Cheers, Jens
