Stand damping
Posted by: Wiltshireman on 06 July 2003
Has anyone any experience/advice on stand damping using lead, sand or whatever? a friend has just had made a pair of granite stands for for his Gale speakers (cost £680). They vibrate a little but they incorporate a hole in the back for extra damping to be added. Neither of us has any experience of such things and would appreciate any advice and tips.

Try 7.5 lead shot. Works a treat!
Small enough to fit into any small hole.

Same here. I use lead shot filled to the top for my R3 (Reference Target series). They are extremely heavy.

Andy,
Are you serious? Frying pans etc?
Sand-pit sand is dry when purchased - a lot less messy!

Playground sand, as opposed to other varieties, is the way to go unless you want a biology project in your stands. It comes dry and is filtered free of insects, cigarette butts, and condom wrappers.

Much obliged all. I will pass this on and will report back as and when, might take a while so will post a new thread when the time comes. Many thanks.

Another tip is to stuff a bin liner into the hole first then fill that up, it will then protect the inside of the stand and is easier to empty.
Not that I can see much damage coming to granite stands, but it was usefull for me old actecamas as they were metal.

I have seen both sand and Lead used together.
The shot is first put in and left to settle for
a few hours. Next fine grain sand is put in very slowly and shaken down to fill the area the shot has not filled. A bit overkill. It does add more weight to the stand...
