New Format

Chaps

I thought that I would set up this posting to save Mike Hanson / Vuk the trouble when they decide to complain about the new layout.

There's bound to be something about it for them to moan about.

Yours in eager anticipation

Mick

NB...I cannot enter the Mana forum due to being banned, so can some Manaphile please tell old JW (if their brave enough)that Naim have once again improved the layout so he needs to do some more copying. Thats another Gin and Tonic he owes Paul. At this rate, it would be cheaper for JW to send him a bottle through the post.

My biggest problem so far is the new information in the header and footer of each message. At least some of this was over in the margin before, and now there's more wasted space.

By adding this information to the righthand side, they had to delimit it with more horzontal lines, which is looking rather noisy.

Also, what's that silly "PopIt" thing do? It seems rather mysterious right now. It would be nice if some it were described somewhere.

Finally, the new folder icons are ugly!

I'll probably get used to the new layout after a while.

BTW, the auto-quoting reply is kind of cool, although what I really want is threaded messages. It would usually prevent the need for quotes in the first place.

Can someone explain what that does, please?

I just found the help page. If you push the pop-it buton, you'll find the FAQ. It looks like it's also accessible via the "faq" link at the top of the page. It states that I can specify my preferences, though, and I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

I just did a search. In the search they offer you this "popit".

Seems like it will notify you via email or "pop ups" when a subject you've discussed comes up.

Sounds like those annoying "instant message" things you get in AOL.

Just had to check my wifes AOL account while she was gone. Can't understand how anyone can use AOL.

THe new format is a little disconcerting, but the forum is overall better for it.

The pop-it popup allows you to make the choice of receiving updates via your email, or via . At least that how it looked from this end. There's more info here.

What I appreciate is that links to messages, that are on pages other than page 1, now go to that page, rather than the top of page 1. Nice.

Yeah, we all miss threading, but let's all realize that naim are in the hifi business. I still appreciate the presence of this forum, warts and all.

Cheers

Hmm, let's see how well it handles images...

In the old format, all posts per page were handled by the same TABLE--in this (CSS-based) format, each post gets its own section.

That's an improvement.

Great, finally we have e-mail notification. Very practical. I'll found out the other new features using the "new" forum.
Unfortunately the layout is not an improvement. I agree with Mikes comments there.

1. The space under the name is wasted and not clearly enough separated from the text body. I would suggest putting the "member details" again underneath the name and use a vertical line separator between name and text body.
2. Move the "edit" features and profile under the message. In general you want to edit a message or find out more about somebody after reading a message, so why move up?
3. Then the title of the message, now appearing in bold, can move back next to the name of the "author" and will be more clearly separated from the text body. With the new layout the title appears in bold, but to me it's not obvious enough that it's the title. Can become confusing if somebody is using bold in a message as well.

Ciao!

When looking at the "new" forum, I'm struck with the thought of "different is not better". Go back to the old visual layout, but keep the new features. I'm sure that this is a trivial matter, and would make us all happy.

I just noticed that the "message icon" does no longer appear next to the title of the message, but next to the date posted. This makes no sense to me. The smiley or whatever symbol refers to the title and gives this bit of extra info about what you can expect to read further down. IMHO another argument to put the message details and edit buttons underneath the text body and move the title up next to the "message icon".

Ciao!

Willem

P.S. Hi Mathijs, nice to hear from you. Did you finish your "scriptie" and do you know already when you'll move to GB?

At least the new format has a more convenient layout of features. Things like the search facility are immediately accessible.

Although I guess we're all a little shell-shocked with the new layout.

As far as I can make out, there's still no tree structuring. Which may be a good thing, as I find new posts are often easy to miss in the tree.

We could do with some more "GraemLinns". I'm sure the moderators could do with nA Graemlins.

I've just 'Pop'ed a couple of threads and the e-mail notification (nice feature) doesn't seem to be working at the moment. (UPDATE:- takes a few minutes to get through - fine, no problem).

Two much bigger grumbles, though.

Firstly the option to 'Pop' all new threads does not appear to have been implemented. This really would be great. If we can't have this, can we please have something that will 'Pop' all the existing postings on a thread into my mailbox, so at least I can keep them together?

Secondly, I can't find any indication, either on the list of threads or when I look at one, as to whether I have 'Pop'ed it, and therefore don't need to read it. How do I know I've already 'Pop'ed it & don't need to do it again? I've already done this once!

I don't think I need to grumble about the new layout since it's already been covered.

Previously it was possible in the advanced search to specify to search through old postings back to any date you chose.

Now it is only possible to search 1, 5, 10 or 30 days previously, or wade through everything.

All that went before has not been lost. This is an upgrade with the Forum from a 102 to an 82.
The worst case scenario for me was that the format would change - like going fom CD to SACD, and having to bin your 500+ CD collection! cool

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink

What happened to the icons beside each post, which enabled you to quickly see which messages were new? Now I have to read the bottom post on up, to determine whether I've read it before. How tedious is that going to get?

This "upgrade" is seeming more like a downgrade with every glance!!!!!

I just don't know how I managed to cope before.

Only problem is it seems to be wasting much more of my rather small screen than it used to. Who cares, I'll just get a huge monitor. It must be worth it.

Alex

ps. kinda wish the whizkids had all snow-boarded off a cliff last weekend.

:heavy humour on.

I left the world of SW and ungreatful users a year ago - and all your comments brought the whole nausea back - bluddy users - what do they know all they can say is

It is exactly what we asked for --- but not what we wanted.

The downhill trend started with the introduction of lower case letters onto chain printers.

After that it has just been cosmetic overload. Bring back the flashing light display.

:heavy humour off.

Apologies, felt sort of new here and stumbled on the "quote" thing by mistake...
Posted on: 21 August 2001 by Andrew Randle
The only real grip I have is the format of the displayed messages. The message titles look part of the text, and the email, profile and other icons should be at the bottom of the message as before.

At the moment the message formats look more messy and less easy to read.

Mike, the unread message icons are still there - it's just that they've changed from a yellow light-bulb to a yellow folder symbol.

Andrew (ooh what does this button do?! big grin )

the e-mail notification feature is great, but when I try to read it using my web-mail program (which doesn't parse HTML format mails) I get a screen full of gibberish, or I get logged out (how does it do that??)

Since the system can obviously send text format e-mails (it's still what gets sent if you 'e-mail this topic to a friend', can we have an option to send the 'Pop's in plain text?

cheers, Martin

P.S. Paul - please don't take this personally! In the real world of working to budgets and timescales any major new release of software may have a few glitches.

Is there a formal process we should go through to notify the developers of these problems?

Yes, I can see those folders on the thread view, but not on the message view.

"Is there a formal process we should go through to notify the developers of these problems?"

Thanks for your consideration! Once all the newness dies down, I will go through this topic and sort the responses. I will then talk with infopop about your feedback, perhaps some changes can be made.

I appreciate Naim's efforts to improve things here. It's no better, no worse, from my POV. Apart from that all the info that was previously contained in the sidebar now goes in to the footer - wastes vertical space.

I would prefer to see the old forum archive on line again (the posts, the information - our old diaries) for access, before further inconsequential changes are made to the appearance of this one.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, and appreciate that there may be more meaningful "below the skin" changes to this new update that us users see on the surface. Overall, still pleased to have this place to communicate with Naim, and with each other.

Keith,

whilst this may be true, the 'e-mail this page to a friend' feature is still broken - if you do this for the second page it just sends the first page.

Still, search feature working properly will be a real benefit.
