Suicidal tendencies

Posted by: sonofcolin on 12 July 2003

I recently contacted Rega regarding servicing of an original P9. They stated that as long as the TT had never been tipped on its side then I don't need to worry. I have just been emailed this:
P9
My options are as follows:
1. Fix the P9
2. Buy Mana and don't fix the P9 as it is bound to sound better.
3. Sell everything and buy a Kenwood midi system.

Other suggestions are more than welcome.

Aww that look painful! Is that your misfortune? You have my sympathies.

Some have suggested that the P9 has a laissez-faire response to Mana, so I'd vote for fixing the P9, Colin.

There's been a few good threads about affixinf a wall shelf so it doesn't detach itself from the wall in the middle of the night. Can someone provide the link?

you should have to be 18 to look at that.

I'm lucky in the fact that I haven't actually seen this 'in the flesh' as yet as I am in England and the Hi-Fi is in the states! A friend is looking after the apt whilst i'm away and sent me the photo. The email had the subject "sad news" A bit of a f**kin understatement if you ask me!!

I shall try and forget about this until I go home. I am trying to find out more about the damage.

Earth quakes sometimes happen, a well sprung lp12 would have bounced back.

Wow, if there ever was a poster warning not to Molly a TT wall support directly into Gyprock, this would have to be it. Tough break, I feel your pain Frown.

Here's what I would do, clean it up, get it working and sell it on eBay for more than you paid. Just make sure you use the words "high end, audiophile, and rare" in the heading bar. If you have to make any repairs, advertise them as upgrades/mods. I have seen US$2 garage sale Japanese plastic belt-drive TT's sell for over US$100, so the sky is the limit. The secret to success on eBay is (1) a clever heading bar with as many mouth watering keywords as will fit, (2) a flowery description with plenty of audiophile words (air, bloom, liquid, slam, etc.), name dropping (Roy Gandy etc) and history of the company, (3) lots of photos with as much of your other gear in the background (the most expensive stuff must dominate the photos, this proves you are an expert). Once it's sold, buy yourself some new kit! It's worked for me and a number of my friends.

Gumby missed out the other type of fixing for masonery applications - has many advantages in that it doesn't further stress the material as does an expanding dynabolt.

Ramset Chemset is one of the tradenames - once the correct dia hole is drilled, and cleaned out, a 2-part poxy vial is inserted into the hole. The threaded bolt follows, breaking the vial mixing the epoxy - voila! A rock-steady bolt. Worth searching out.

Could be worse - could have fallen on someone. Trust you're insured and it all turns out ok.

cheers, and enjoy the rest of your trip.

ode to colin'
colin's rega it looks as though it died
it's been pictured on it's side
do not fret,don't despair
my little poem will get you there.
clean it up put it on the bay
lots of money more than you would pay
if we know that this is true
put up another and make it two.
lots of money coming in
is a new lp12 such a sin
nice and shiny squeaky clean
my knackared rega's just a dream
i can't believe the things i hear
the sounds so sweet i'm full of cheer.
so if your rega falls to the floor
buy a lp12 you will hear a lot more.
hope this cheers you up a little bit colin. happened to me once with a wallmounted speaker it landed on a very old vase that had been in the family for years.

Minime,

I am very touched.

An LP12 is not in my thoughts at all. I don't really like its particular 'bloomy' sound, so if the P9 is completely wrecked, then it will be another P9! eBay could be an option, but I'm hoping that the picture looks more spectacular than the actual damage.

I, more than anyone else, feel your pain.

This happened to me a couple of years ago, wrecking a lovely LP12/Lingo/Aro, a phono stage and a recently rebuilt Linn Asaka MC.

I'll dig out the pictures I took at the time and post them. Luckily I had insurance, hopefully you did too. Doesn't look as serious for you, at least your turntable didn't hit the floor at force, using the cartridge on the Aro as a brake...

Thanks for the sympathy people. I knew that I couldn't have been the only person this has happened to!

Insurance. No. I moved 3 months ago and well, I think you know the story. Didn't get around to changing stuff.

The arm and cartridge are ok as i remember locking the arm (phew!) I think the only damage is a chip from the ceramic platter. Hopefully, Rega can fix this and then it should be ok.

Looks quite spectacular though!
