Peak District Attractions

Posted by: Sloop John B on 03 June 2005

2 adults 3 children (8-11) heading off to Peak district for a week this July.

I'd appreciate any tips from locals or people who have holidayed there on things to do, places to go, apart from the obvious.

Thanks

In no particular order...

- Chatsworth House (Also Haddon Hall)
- One of the Castleton caves - Speedwell would get my vote
- The village of Eyam, for its historic interest
- The Ladybower Reservoirs - The Dam Busters practiced there.
- A walk along one of the gritstone edges, Stanage or Curber / Froggat, excersise, views + pub lunch
- Monsaldale Head, good pub and fantastic views
- A glider flight from Great Hucklow (Derby + Lancs. Gliding Club. should have a web site.)
- Bakewell, where the puddings come from
- Ashton in the Water, picturesque villiage
- One of the nearby cities (When it rains) my vote for Sheffield, 'cos I grew up there...

Give me more idea of where you will be based and what you enjoy / don't enjoy doing and I'm sure I can come up with more.

In Sheffield:
- Industrial museums, Kellham Island and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
- The Fat Cat pub, ages since I was in there so it may well have been bulldozed
- Jacks Records, 2nd hand Vinyl.
- One of the climbing walls, The Foundry or The Edge, they almost certainly do starter mornings for the kids. Websites should give details.
- Meadowhall, shopping complex, best to visit at the end of your holls...
- Audio Images, Naim dealer ;-) ditto

Best approach in to Sheffield from the peak is to head up towards Stanage Edge from Hathersage , you basicly take a left at the far end of the villiage, and then over Burbage Moor. This gives you a fantastic view over Sheffield (Spectacular at night, actually.)

As well as the Castleton Caves which are a must. You could do Poole Cavern Near Buxton, one of the largest in the country apparently. Also Buxton itself could be worth a few hours (Pavillion Gardens etc)
poole's cavern
Speedwell Cavern
Blue John Cavern
Treak Cliff Cavern

Buxton Opera House has some good gigs on for evening entertainment. I saw John Mayall and Think Floyd there recently.

Thanks for all your help.

We'll be staying in Wootton which is near Ashbourne in the south of the peak district.

alas not too many nights at gigs will be spent!

basically what amuses the children is what we are searching out - though if I don't have a new set of speakers earmarked by then I hope to get an audition or 2 along the way!

A walk alongside the River Dove in Dovedale.

A walk alongside the River Dove in Dovedale...
... is great, as long as you avoid weekends, bank holidays, sunny (dry) days during school holls, etc. etc., unless you enjoy crowds. You get the picture. (This is my experience of Dovedale, anyway.)

However, hiring bikes and cycling along the Tissington Trail, which is also in this area, is slightly more tolerable if it is busy. (Assuming that all the bikes aren't taken !) If I remember correctly, this (Tissington Trail) takes in Thor's Cave and has several pubs on-route. A good day out. Google should turn up this and other alternatives as far as bike hire and where to cycle.

David

Apologies - I remember Dovedale as being very pleasant 45 years ago <g>

A beer in the Smith's Tavern in Ashbourne. The chippy opposite is pretty good too!

Derek,
Appologies not necessary. Dovedale IS really nice, but it is a bit of a tourist magnet. The same is true of many many locations in the Peak.

Another problem is finding parking at the more popular locations. And by that I mean almost anywhere, even in villages etc. The Peak Park authorities have also made 'casual' parking along the roadside etc. more difficult. (No bad thing, actually.) The down side is that if you can't find a parking space, then moving on is often the only option. In other words, getting up early in the morning so as to get to the more popular attractions / locations would be strongly recommended.
