Suggestions sought: silly sidegrade or sensible scenario?

Posted by: JeremyD on 21 August 2002

System: LP12/Cirkus/Lingo/Ekos/<cartridge>; Rotel RCD965BX; 102/90; Kans. [With an Audiotech table for the turntable, KanII stands for the Kans and a Tripod stand for the rest].

Problem: I had been vinyl-less for a couple of months until I got, on trial, a Rega Super Elys cartridge to replace my old K9. However, unless a near miraculous transformation occurs today or tomorrow, I'm going to have to return the cartridge because I simply don't find it good enough. I don't want my K9 back with an Audio Technica stylus [I've been using it so long that I want a new perspective on my record collection] and it would take me months to save the extra for a Dynavector 20X, which (if it sound closer to a 17D2 than a 10X4) I expect I will like.

Question: Assuming I like the 20X, does the following radical course of action make sense from the point of view of getting a better sound from vinyl without having to wait several months for it:

Sell the 102, 90 and CD player, and add the money to the £150 (approx) I have in my cartridge fund to get a 20X, MC Stageline, used SNAPS (or HiCap if I'm very lucky) and a used NAIT2 or NAIT3?

(I can live without CD indefinitely, or use my PC's CD drive occasionally).

All constructive suggestions/comments welcome. smile

TIA

JD

As I see it you have 3 choices:

1 - Live with the Rega cartridge.

2 - Find a better cartridge in your price range. (If one exists).

3 - Sell your 102 and buy a used 32.5 and put the funds towards a much better cartridge.

Your suggestion seems a bit extreme to me. For one thing it might take weeks to sell your amp and CD player, then many weeks before you find a used Snaps. You could be without a system for a long time.

Good luck

Steve B: 3 - Sell your 102 and buy a used 32.5 and put the funds towards a much better cartridge.

I think this, more than anything else, makes me realise the folly of my plan. I upgraded from 32.5 to 102, and there's no way I'm going back.

Your suggestion seems a bit extreme to me... ...You could be without a system for a long time.

Yes, you're right. In retrospect, "a bit extreme" seems like an understatement. Thanks, Steve. smile

Geoff, thanks very much for the offer but I think I'll abandon my plan for now. If I'm overcome by another outbreak of sidegraditis in the next few days (e.g. in the unlikely event that my dealer doesn't think it's a wholly crazy idea) then I'll contact you.

That's what I'd do. Close enough, isn't it, to your price range? Would sound superb in your system (IMHO).

Also, not that you asked, but I'd go for a vintage 140 as soon as funds became available...

Shhhh, Don't mention the 10x4. Jeremy has said many times that he hates this cartridge. Don't know why though, mine sounds pretty good to me.

OTOH don't they do a low output version of the 10x4? Might be worth a try.

Umm, go for what ever cart you like, however the 90 is doing you no favours (in context of the 102) regardless of what the mullet crowd say.

They do a 10x4 gold low o/p. I had one for about 18 months, significantly better than the standard high output beastie and about 30 squid more IIRC. Not sure how widely they are available.

Simon

P.S. I changed to 17D2 'cause I wore the 10x4 out and it's too light to work on an Akito.

Make sure it's run in and then clean the stylus before you pass judgement. Probably a good idea to have a play with tracking weight and set by ear as well.
