Blu Ray Advice

Posted by: Tam on 23 February 2008

So, with the format war now over, I think I would quite like to take the plunge. However, I have no idea what to buy so would welcome any suggestions (with a budget of under £400). I've read some stuff suggesting the best thing to do is buy a PS3 (which might be interesting as it could also allow me to take advantage of my various hybrid SACDs). But what of stand alone players?

Thanks in advance,

Tam

n.b. I already have a HD ready TV (though it only goes up to 720p or 1080i).

The PS3 system update 2.20, to make the PS3 BluRay profile 2.0 (= BD-LIVE) compatible is out.

PS3 System Software update features

This makes it the first player available with this standard. Although you can't buy any disks here yet, which actually use the new features...

It adds some other nice video features, like "resume play" (even when you ejected the disc), and mosquito noise reduction.

What is still missing is native bitstream output of all HD-sound formats.

happy updating

Surely that's coming Adrian?

The HDMI driver chip in the PS3 doesn't have the ability to send the bitstream. Although the HDMI interface in the PS3 is v1.3, the requirement to transmit bitstream is an optional feature of the spec, not mandatory. Unless PS3's are fitted with a different chip in the future they will never be capable of this.

Actually it's OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode).

It produces it's light by itself without the need of background light as in LCDs.

The Sony XEL-1 is the first TV in serial production with this technology. But 11 inches is not really homecinema like yet Winker

Before there where only smaller displays like in electrical shavers or car hifi. It is still a problem to make them last long enough for commercial applications. And of course the size has to grow...

I saw the Sony OLED the other day. Pretty impressive, if small. I think the big ones will blow us away when they arrive.

Thanks Allan

A couple more questions Winker

The PS3 will be able to decode DTS-HD MA via software but not hardware?

The PS3 already supports Dolby TrueHD via hardware?

What is the difference between bitstream and PCM?

Thanks!

Jay,

I don't follow the inner workings of the PS3 *that* closely but I do tend to keep up with what the various machines can and can't do.

The PS3 doesn't decode DTS Master Audio at the moment but it could be on the way. If it happens it seems likely it will be decoded by software otherwise it would have probably happened before now.

It can decode Dolby TrueHD but I don't know if this is done in software or hardware.

Bitstream is the actual Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, etc. data that is recorded on the disc. This data is a compressed (and lossy in the case of plain DD or DTS for example) form of the original digital audio that existed in PCM format. When decoded, or uncompressed if you like, the digital audio is restored back into PCM format ready for sending to the digital to analog converters.

Hmm, this seems odd to me. I've used the PS3 on several occasions with an Onkyo receiver and the Onkyo has confirmed it's receiving the TrueHD bitstream. I haven't got any discs with Master Audio yet.

Hi Frank,

Take a look at the link to the comparison of various blu-ray players posted in the other thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=980672

You'll see that the PS3 can decode DD+ and Dolby TrueHD, it can't decode DTS HR or DTS MA and it doesn't have the ability to bitstream any of the advanced audio formats.

Jay: I hoped it would come one day with a software update. But as Allan has point out, it seems to be a hardware restriction which I was not aware of...

Allan: Thank you for the info and the reference. As with the former PlayStations I guess one day will come a slimmer and cheaper PS "three" version. With closer packed chips, less power hungry, quieter and probably also a better HDMI driver chip.

happy gaming
Adrian

P.S. Gran Turismo 5 prologue is out Winker

I have an Onkyo 605 which can decode the new formats so I'll have to try when the room gets put back together post painting.

I am looking at getting a Blu Ray player but I have a large collection of region 1 DVD's so should I look at these units - the older Sony BDP-S1 or newer Sony BDP-S300?
