Iceland Volcano

Posted by: FlipTop on 15 April 2010

Does the team think that the Icelantic volcano erruption is retribution for Gordon Brown's use of the UK anti-terrorist legislation to freeze Icelantic assets in the UK following the Icelantic banking collapse ?

Not really. However, the Icelandic wind farms suddenly all being orientated SSE and set to "blow", might be... Winker

Blow ??? - is that a Freudian slip
Posted on: 15 April 2010 by graham55
Just a joke, I thought, as I don't think that wind turbines can actually blow air.

First the Cod Wars, then they vote to not repay their debt, now this; they must be stopped!

That's odd, it always seems windy when the turbines are turning.....

Sorry Graham, maybe a bit deep for some.
Blow - Ash(es) have some other connotations
The street wise will get it

Amazing to see this:

Not often you'll see the UK airspace devoid of traffic - best news is I now get the day off!

I just can't imagine how frustrating it must be to have your plans destroyed by something as freak as a volcano eruption.

However I might find out it if continues for the next few weeks. Here's to hoping.

We had an International meeting today in London and half the folks didn't show up and the other half is grounded - pretty neat excuse "Couldn't make the meeting because of the volcanic eruption", it's a new one. Big Grin

Sorry am I missing something but the cloud of ash is over Iceland and can be seen from space ,therefore they know where it is so can't the planes just fly around it?

Seems to be "there is no problem we can't have knee jerk reaction to".

Fine dust drifting at over 20,000 feet where the winds can take it hundreds of miles.

It is sharp and clogs aircraft engines, as well as 'sandpapering' the edges of the flight surfaces and also the glass of the pilots windscreen and also the lights.

There is/was a great 'Air Crash Investigation' on the 1982 (?) British Airways flight that encountered an ash plume over Indonesia, on National Geographic.

The BBC news has been terrible on this, lots of interviews with people who only know their flight has been canceled, and virtually no scientific information to explain why.

I saw that show, fascinating, first they had St. Elmo's fire, a glow around the cockpit of their BA 747. Then their engines started cutting out, then came back, then cut out and then finally came back.

When they landed a huge amount of the paint had been scrubbed away ... it was shocking ...

"He lost all 4 engines and was preparing to ditch into the ocean, but then they thought they'd fire again. So now Cpt Moody was able to turn around to fly back to Jakarta, however, the windscreen was basically all covered with ash and visability was very limited. So he asked Jakarta to turn the lights on highest intensity, of which they already were, so then he requested a Cat 1 ILS, only to find out that the ILS system at Jakarta was down, so he was left to manually fly and land the a/c. The only decent vision he could get thru the window was on the left so he flew the whole approach with his head right to one side. Very much like Ace Ventura in his Car."

The windshield was etched very badly due to the volcanic ash. A fine mist also came into cabin, it was so fine that the dust made it through the filters.

What really annoys me about this is that when I get stuck on the M25 near the junction with the M4, something which happens pretty much every day, I can no longer watch any planes flying overhead! Be gone, cloud, be gone!! Roll Eyes

Male at an airport on being asked about his cancelled flight - "There's nothing on the ground so why the delays? It's terrible."
