using non Naim eq

Posted by: AussiePete on 07 January 2003

I have the opportunity to buy a digital room/speaker eq/digital crossover.
This , of course will install between my 32.5 &250. The question is,has anybody tried it and would the supposed band limited signal the 32.5 provides be taken care of by the pre and simply allow the digital eq to pass this signal? Would it cause any problems?
I am particularly interested to hear from those of you that have actually tried it as there seems to be a particular contingent that considers Naim equipment unstable. I for one, have tried many cables for speakers,interconnects and the interconnect between pre& without the slightest hint of anything but the whole soundstage opening up and blossoming.
Thanks in anticipation,
Pete

I can't comment on the particular set of equipment and connection you are talking about.

For what it's worth I have an A/V Home cinema system to which I added a 112/150 for serious stereo music listening.

I also have to admit to experimenting with both SACD and DVDA which are supplied as 6 channels of analog signal which you have to feed direct into the appropriate inputs on the A/V amp.

The next step was of course to send the 2 front channels from these audio sources back thru' the 112/150 to get the best quality out of the main channels.

This is quite easy since I have pre-out sockets on the A/V so the A/V preamplified signal goes thru' the 112 using it's A/V input set to unity gain and into the 150.

NOW we get to the meat of this message. The connection path for the signal has a several points in it where non-naim cables are in place. This has become an interesting experiment because as you have reported I can affect the nature of the sound I hear from the 112/150 by swapping the signal cable types in use.
I can compare what I hear with the direct signal from the same sources fed through only the 112/150 with no non-naim gear or non-naim cables in the path.

I have found just like you that I can open out the sound and make it "faster" with most types of signal cable (there was one I tried that "screwed it up") and the 112/150 does not complain to being fed that way.
