Humming along?

Posted by: thenaim'sjustbill on 21 May 2003

I have recently purchased a few used audio items that have been added into my system. I replaced my old SNAPS with a Hi-cap, my old NAP 140 with a NAP 250 and updated the tweeters (I just blew an original on one side) in my Pro-ac Studio 2's with Morel's.

Frown Bad news:

I "tweeked" my knee on the job and have been home from work on a disibility leave this past week or so.

Wink Good news:

I get to listen to my system a lot more between trips to the fridge for an ice pack treatment.

Just recently, I noticed (without any music playing) a very, very faint hum coming from my speakers. So faint that you almost have to put your ear to the grillcloth to hear it.

Since there's more than one new variable in the "chain", it's hard to figure out where this noise is coming from.

Any suggestions?

Regards,

My sistem hums quietly to itself when the phono input is selected and no record is playing, but is only audible with the volume up at antisocial levels.

It also hisses when CD is selected.

My newly acquired (18 month old) Hi-cap hums quite happily to itself. The one I borrowed did too.

When I put a record on or a CD in the sistem plays music. Smile

Glad to know it's not just me with the humming turntable - urm, WHY does it not do it when a record is playing though - that I CAN'T figure out...

On my NAIT3 (just installed yesterday - yey!) when selecting phono (aux) with the NA322 boards, from any line level source, you get a brief pop/buzz noise - is this normal?

Hum vs. Hiss?

I guess you could describe the noise as more of a hiss than a hum. (Highly technical terms, right?)

It's almost like a low level "white noise" sound... you know, like the sound between stations when nothing is actually tuned in on a radio - but very steady and at a whisper. (Not raspy or fluctuating.)

It doesn't seem to matter what's selected on the pre-amp or whether the volume is up or down.

Are you more confused than before? Roll Eyes
