A lot of great choices, Stu. I'd add Miles Davis' In A Silent Way sessions boxed set, too ... if for nothing else than to hear the original bossa-nova version of the title track, as Joe Zawinul originally wrote it.
The Mayer set ... does it have tracks not on the live DVD?
Best,
Fred

The Blue Note Years - A 14CD set celebrating 60 years of Blue Note recordings from 1939 to 1999. Out of production now, I think.

Symphonies 1 - 15 plus:
"October" Symphonic Poem Op.131
"The Sun Shines on Our Motherland" Cantata Op.90
The Execution of Sepan Razin Op.119

So far Amazon have 6 reviews, all ***** 5 star!
A bit pricey but worth every penny imho : )

Vaughan Willimas 'The Complete Symphonies' conducted by Sir Adrain Boult.
Probably one of my most played box sets, those with a great knowledge of orchestral recordings might offer a better opinion. At under £20 for 8 CDs of some of the finest English classical music it is one of the best introductions to orchestral music for someone brought up on rock music, it offers something different but still very accessible.
All the Columbia Miles Davis box sets are worth hearing, nice to get in their original box forms if you wish to throw money at Ebay sellers.
Also the Tangerine Bootleg boxes are good, but I already had the second one's concerts from the Tangerine Tree distributions (bootlegs, with the band's permission).
Another, now deleted box set, David Sylvian 'Weatherbox.

His first 3 studio albums, plus the cassette instrumental release 'Steel Cathedrals', and in a fantastic package designed by artist and collaborator Russell Mills.

King Crimson 'The Great Deceiver' 4 CD live collection of performances by the Bruford, Cross, Fripp, Wetton line-up.
Far nicer packing by Bill Smith for the original release if you wish to track that down.
And the box set I would most like own, if money were no consideration.

(next to the 'Remasters' box on the left.)
Led Zeppelin 'Demand Unprecedented In The History Of Rock Music' (Empress Valley - bootleg) Limited Edition of 250 copies, 22CD set of the complete performances of Led Zeppelin's five nights at Earls Court in 1975.
Stryder.de listing
I hate to think what that would cost, even if one were seen for sale.
One to avoid, Robert Plant 'Nine Lives', it just does not work as a collection of music, his 80's stadium rock is for a different market to the 'Strange Sensation' albums, better to pick the music you like, and not waste money on that which you do not.

This is probably a great thread for this time of year as it will no doubt give some early Christmas present ideas.
I presume there must be some good box sets covering some of the bands on Factory or from the Manchester scene of the late 70's and 80's, a recommendation from that scene would be a good present for a friend of mine, but I know very little about that music.
I must have a look at the Bruford box, I haven't listened to Earthworks for ages, but I saw them numerous times in the 80's.

Sorry smilie failure.
Thanks for link.
I'm really annoyed 'cos some one else must like it as it's listed at the library but they have no copies, usually means someone has stolen it.

They're on Fledgling so absolute care has been taken to ensure they discs are perfect. Shirley's box set is extraordinary, but then so are all Shirley's recordings.quote:Originally posted by munch:Have they been remastered or messed with?quote:Originally posted by ROTF:

The next best to this is the Harvest Years, which has a superb remastering of Anthems of Eden, which is arguably the greatest extended track every brought to a recording studio.
