changing boards in a nac82

Posted by: Boz on 20 August 2002

How difficult is it to change the boards in a nac82 ?

I have a P3 with m/m and the nac82 I am considering buying has m/c boards

1) which boards do I need to buy ?
2) any idea where I can source some fairly new s/h ones from ?
3) should I leave this kind of thing to my dealer ?

thought of opening any cases fills me with dread !!

Any ideas ?

Try it, its easier than an easy thing.

You disconnect everything, flip it onto its back, undo the four screws in the feet and an allen headed bolt (if I remember rightly) and the case slides out of the inner sleeve. Then the phono boards just press onto spikes in the PCB. You can't even get them the wrong way round as the boards are left and right handed.

You need NA523MM boards, you could try eBay or Audiogon. If you end up buying them from your dealer then they will probably fit them for you.

I have some spares but they are 523MC 'S' boards unfortunately.

Don't rule out getting a stageline! My trusted naim dealer tells me he believes the stageline is better than the internal boards, plus you have the upgrade option with various power supplies. Just a thought ---

Boz,

this is OK, but you'll also need a power supply. If you're prepared to splurge £900, then a Stageline + HiCap is dramatically better than the boards in a 52. And it should be!

But ... PLEASE DON'T DO THIS. It would be ridiculous (wasted) for a P3 (assuming it's a Rega P3, and not a Phonosophie P3!)

Now for the good news - I'm pretty sure that the NAC92 uses the same MM/MC boards as the 82. Take them out of the 92 before you sell it, and transplant them to the 82.

If you're sure that an MC is nowhere on the horizon, sell them with the NAC92 ***if it gets you a better trade-in price***.

Absolutely, this is what I've done.

Just upgraded from a 102 to a 52. Plan to move boards over to the 52 but wonder if a stageline is a better option. Dont have a top line turntable (old Oracle with mission 774)so is it worth it. I understand you can power a stageline from a 52.

Can the stageline be powered from an 82?

Does someone has ever tried to put a standard NA523 phono board into a separate box and powered it with a HiCap?
(I know in this case I shall use a Prefix instead, but they don't have MM Prefix (oohh sacrilege eek ))

a stageline cannot be powered from an 82.
I have a lowly P3 w/ stageline. Not only does it sound wonderful, but I have options in the future.
Added expense of powersupply still equals more potential than simply installing internal boards.
If one has board available, that is the by far the cheapest, most expedient route to get your vinyl spinning. If you don't know where you want to go with your records, move the internal boards, listen to lots of music, relax, enjoy life and hug your family the very next time they walk into the room

Yes, it is somewhat better than the internal boards (at least on my v. early 52).

Yes. This is the configuration I use.

Thanks for all your comments, I will be using my 522 m/m boards out of my 92 as suggested which I will then be selling.

Any ideas how much I should ask for the 92 when I sell it, think it is 1994/1995 ?

Thanks again this is a good solution, looking forward to hearing my new 82 with my 2 Hi-caps and my recently aquired 250 should be a good step up from my original 92/Hi/90.3 which to my ears sounded great.
