new compact digital camera

Posted by: scottyhammer on 14 February 2008

hi guys,

im after a nice compact digital camera that will take brilliant all round pictures and has a fast start up time and is especially good at close-up shots for my work.
ive got my eye on an olympus mju840 @ £150 or olympus fe290 @ £130. these have dual image stabaliser and down to 5cm macro capabilities.
have you recently bought a compact camera and did you research before buying ? or do you recommend anything else.
your inputs are welcomed. regards, scotty

INTERESTING ONE THIS - I OVERODE THE FLASH AND TURNED IT OFF TO GET THIS REALLY MOODY SHOT OF THE 17D3 CART.

Scotty, when you take photos like that take the camera off AWB (Auto White Balance) and put it on Tungsten light.

no need jules - it has intelligent iso and 2 scene modes to use if you wish. these cameras are very clever nowadays! Winker

Yes, you do mate. It should look something more like this...... (those Panny compacts are cracking cameras though!)

yes you may have a point - but hey ive had it for 1 day and am still playing around with the settings. but if im getting these results when im not used to it then.......................
my point is these compacts are getting really good for what they are! we all know their limitations and they will not compete against a professional DLR but its getting much closer.
itll do for me ! Winker

p.s. dont forget these pics are without any adjustments after the shot.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to be critical. I just wanted to offer a bit of information (basically that you cannot always rely on automatic)

Well done Scotty!

julian,

i agree with you and im gonna play around with it......theres a lot of settings to digest.
i thought my sony was pretty good but this panny is in a different league ! i know im sounding like a panny salesman but i think everyone should know that its a bloody good buy.
i think it would make a superb 2nd camera if you had a very good expensive DLR camera and lenses etc' which you cant put in your pocket.

yes kuma...and as i said i havent used an editing programme - thats how they came out.
the 3" screen really helps to get the pic right in the first place.

I have just bought a Panny tonight!

did you get it at 7dayshop or are you pulling my plonker ?

I have bought a Panny compact tonight, no joking. I have been trying to decide on a new compact since just before Christmas. A Panasonic and a Canon (G9) were the only two on the wittled down shortlist after looking at numerous models.

I ended up with an LX2 in black (I played with Cymbiosis Pete's back in November or December last year and was very impressed).

Scotty

I purchased it from UKDigital cameras, not 7day who arn't selling that particular model. Fortunately, I have loads of memory that will suit this camera which saves a few £££. I will be buying a spare battery though (probably from 7day if they sell them!)
