Richard Thompson

I'm been listening over the past few days to the 5 cd box set on Free Reed records
and tonight was listening to Beeswing and I just thought "what an absolutely perfect song"
emotional. powerful, excellent playing and wonderful turn around of lyrics at the end.
I know there are a lot of fans on the forum but I'm inspired tonight to proclaim:
If you do not have any Richard Thompson album, go and buy one NOWYou really won't regret it.
I remember hearing "I misunderstood" (from "Rumor and Sigh") on the radio and heading straight down to "Hot Wax" in Rathmines and buying it. Wonderful album midst many more in his catalogue.
Nuff said I'm sure there are others who can elaborate more eloquently.
over to them...................

RT's new album 'Sweet Warrior' is playing as I type. Great stuff.
Witty lyrics, a very distinctive guitar style, and some great tunes.
Agreed - 'I Misunderstood' (from Rumor and Sigh) is truly magnificent.
John.

This man is a gem witty, thoughtful, dark and a great guitarist. There must be a track for every mood. I can't understand any one not liking this guy.
If you don't like his solo work try Fairport Convention or his stuff with the mrs, Linda Thompson.

I'm a big fan. I've been fortunate to see him live a couple times in the last few years. I'll keep an eye out for his new one to be released on vinyl.

Can I also add -
Richard & Linda Thompson - "The Calvary Cross" on I Want To See The bright Lights Tonight is stunning. I would also recommend First Light and Shoot Out The Lights (their last album together).
Just a thought!

When using Pandora a number of months ago I heard the track "Shoot out the Lights" for the first time and I really liked it. That led to me buying the album, which I enjoy playing, and which like Steve, I would also recommend.

I have loads of RT and have seen him live in various permutations over 21 years. However, I am now reluctant to add any more to my collection because my gut feeling is that he's been standing still for a while now. The productions have levelled off to be nothing stunning and quite dry in an inappropriate way. The singing is as good as ever as is the guitar playing but, for me, the songs just aren't there and haven't been since much of Mock Tudor. Indeed the thing I've enjoyed the most in recent years was the CD/DVD of 1,000 Years Of Popular Music - all covers.
He's an excellent artist but for me, despite the reviews generally remaining excellent (and there was at least one scathingly accurate one of Sweet Warrior) he is treading water at present.
Stands back and ducks!

I was wondering when someone was going to say something negative about RT. If this is the sum of it then not too bad I reckon.
At his age I think he deserves to fall in to a comfortable place. To constantly improve must be a strain. As his personal life seems really settled no surprise that his music shouldn't settle too.
Certainly with film soundtracks, the 1000 years thing and the big box set things are moving along.

Hi John G.
This link implies that 'Sweet Warrior' should soon be available from 'Diverse Vinyl'.

Can recommend the music dvd "Richard Thompson Live From Austin Texas" - July 02, 2001 from which his show on Austin City Limits was culled.
With Danny Thompson on upright bass and Michael Jerome on drums.

I have quite a few of his discs and had the pleasure of seeing him and along with Sandy Denny many moons ago in Fairport but he's never been one of my favourite artists.
He is one of those I know is good but he hasn't really clicked with me yet and I mean yet. One day he will.
