Grace Jones Hurricane

The woman is totally batty but I love her. The new album has Sly and Robbie and, at its best, sounds very much like her golden period on Island (nightclubbing, warm lethorette).
I Ordered the double vinyl but the CD has floor shaking bass. Well worth it IMO.

On the subject of Grace Jones. Does anyone know if 'Slave to the Rhythm' was ever released in the original form on CD?
I have a second hand, and quite scratched vinyl copy, and I bought the Island Masters release, but took it straight back.
It simply cut out large sections of the vinyl release that made the album work. The vinyl release has a long instrumental funk/fusion track, but there was only a short section of this on the Island Master. Dreadful.

Thanks for that.
I must try and see if a copy appears on Ebay, but I suspect it would be hard to trakc down. I'll also try some second hand CD shops.

I think the opening line of her new album says it all...
Long live Grace Jones!

OH! I just recently asked a friend if she was still around. Thank you for the info.
she was always outrageous. I don't expect anything less from her. God bless her soul.

Truly amazing Grace Jones is back
voice has lost little if any of its power.
She defines style, invention, power and at 60 tremendously sexy!

Some would call her a rapper.

If you like Grace try this Lady.

hang on - I dont think he said sing anyway but, munch, never sung a note?? I actually really like her singing voice - check "Ive Seen that face before" "Ive done it again" "Use Me" "Unlimited capacity for love" I would call that damn good singing!!! And sly and robbie's playing sure didnt hurt the sound either, production coming in a distant third for me. Check my references - you might be pleasantly surprised! Cheers

Really? Not even after listening to the songs I mentioned? great production for sure, but give the lady a little more credit!! Or we just disagree...which I can live with!

Grace Jones is a contralto vocalist. While her image became more notable than her voice, she is in fact a highly stylized vocalist. She sings in two modes: her monotone speak-sing as in songs like "Private Life", "Walking in the Rain", and "The Apple Stretching", and in an almost soprano mode in such songs as "La Vie en Rose" and "Slave to the Rhythm". Her vocal range spans two-and-a-half octaves.
Above from Wikipedia.
Munch, have you listened to her albums properly? She always moves between speaking and singing. She does both with style and ability.

It's a vocal style. Like Patricia Kaas?

If you like her clasic period on Island then you will find lots to enjoy on Hurricane. Her singing sounds great on this album, just as it always did.

Just put on Nightclubbing - haven't ever played it through the DBLs before, wow.
Went to the opera on Sunday and realised that's what this style is - operatic. As in aria and recitative.

Just got 'Slave to the Rhythm' from Amazon, and despite the track listing on their website, they sent the shoddy 'Island Masters' edition.
Why Island think people wish to have an edited version of the album I have no idea, it fades out some of the best tracks just as they are about to get going, and loses all flow by rearranging the track order, and cutting out the links.
A piece of ****. I have enquired if Amazon have the original CD, as it is an album I would like to own.
By the way, with regard to Amanda Lear, the wikipedia page is quite interesting, she may have been a lady when appeared on the Roxy Music album cover, and made her albums, but it appears that she was not born female.

Oh MY GOD.Someone else likes Amanda Lear. Thought it was only old queens like myself who knew of her. Check out "The Queen of Chinatown"
my favourite track. " She'll blow your blues away" ha ha...best line of all time.
Sweet Revenge has the wonderful first time...sort of discomegamix for getting down dirty..

If she was not so out of it with the Drugs in the mid to late 70s she could of done the disco Deva bit better than any of them IMO.[/QUOTE]
Yes but it was the drugs that made her such an interesting singer from the 80's onwards...if she hadn't had such a debauched life her albums would have sounded like her 60's little girl warbling stuff...it's because her voice sounds so "lived in" and because she' s been to hell and back that's she's able carry a song with such character..

The 12inch single of Williams Blood has some great mixes for those who like to boogie.
