90x2 & IXO

Posted by: Richard Shaw on 20 March 2001

I know this topic has been covered briefly in the past but I'd appreciate whatever comments anyone with any extended critical listening experience with the following might have:

Presently have the opportunity to add a couple of s/h boxes to the pile -- another 90/3 and an IXO to a 3.5/flatcap/92R/flatcap/90/Intro system.

It's not an upgrade I'd really thought much about but it would be VERY affordable. Setting aside both the conventional 'source-first' wisdom and Naim's recommendation that you not go active without the full monty, what do you think? Especially, I guess, as opposed to a 72/140 set up.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your replies, Tim and Graham. I'm leaning toward taking the plunge.

I enjoy the system I have right now very much. While lacking in some performance areas relative to its big brothers, it does offer a coherent, balanced delivery. Part of my concern about going active is that it would become 'bottom heavy,' along the lines of what a 180 does (to my ears) if inserted into this system. From what I gather, neither of you have experienced this, which is good to know.

Since this would be a second-hand purchase from out-of-state, I won't have the opportunity to do a demo, so I really appreciate your input.

Richard, given your current situation/plans go for the active option. Active even at this end of the scale just does it (for me) the IXO/140 combo does things that the 180/250 can't.

WARNING do not discount the IXO as a mid/long-term investment. My IXO has stood its ground over the past 3yrs and now helps give my sbls a good 'kickin'.

Bottom HEAVY no way, just bags more dynamics and control, with gripping PRaT that SOME find a little clinical.
