Oh cruel ironic fate!
Posted by: Willito on 17 October 2003
Imagine my joy last week to take delivery of my CDS3. Close your eyes and share with me a moment the patience, love and satisfaction with which I have listened to it slowly burn in this week.
But my mistress fate is cruel! A small insignificant matter required me to power the system down for less than a minute. One by one as the instruments powered up, their badges beamed brightly as I made my way slowly up the stack to the source. I am sure that you can guess what happened next.
Stress, swearing, sweat!
A frantic call to Billy Vee was able to diagnose the problem as a blown main fuse in the XPS2. (Oh lucky me, that I managed to flick the switch just at the peak of the sine wave. Time to play the lottery I guess, as this weekend it clearly could be me.) Unfortunately they do not have any replacement parts, and so a new fuse will need to be ordered from Naim on Monday. Adding insult to injury I am leaving on a business trip Monday, and will not be back until Saturday. Until then, my beloved CDS3 will remain dark.
Talk about being the man who had it all and watched it float away!
Pardon the pathos and the melodrama, but I thought you would appreciate the irony.
Yours with a stiff upper lip,
Willito (otherwise known as Job)

Absence makes the heart grow stronger.
Or is it Absinth?

Look on the back of your XPS2 for the correct fuse rating....I think it's 2.5A
You wil need a 20mm "T" or anti-surge one.
Paul.

Fair point andrew, I know that maplins could supply me with a fuse for my 180 when it blew.
Posted on: 17 October 2003 by Willito
I will try Graham's first thing in the morning. I was warned, however, that the kind of 2.5 v anti-surge fuses that I would be able to find in electronic stores would probably blow instantly. I must admit that I do not know much about fuses in general, and even less about the one's Naim uses in particular. Based on the posts so far(thanks guys!), this may prove not be to be such a big issue. Is there anything I should be mindful of though?

Will, I am probably stupid, but a fuse is a fuse. They are small and see through. Pull it out and using bloody good eye site or a magnifying glass check what type it is on one of the metal ends then get thee off to a shop that supplies.
I am sure naim would like you to think they are exotic, but they are off the shelf fuses.

Thanks Gary!

Can't you just use a small nail until the uber-fuse arrives from Naim ?

Sad to say but the fuses that Naim use are anti-anti surge. Have had this on an earlier XPS. Stock fuse blew so bought some from local electrical supplier, of the same value and type but they blew straight away again. I thought the XPS was faulty so rang Naim and they sent me some of the fuses they supply which have a higher surge threshold. Worked fine after that!
Best thing to do though is not turn it off!!
Sad news Willito! what cruel fate. Shame Billy vee didn't have the fuses in stock, they are normally very helpful with things such as that.

Hmmm, upgrades.

worth trying here:
http://www.thefusecompany.co.ukthey were very quick when my hicap went (slow 20mm T4A) - but maybe not quick enough for you unfortunately. Packs of ten, so keeps you going for years
cheers

Hopping over from another thread here, should I mention that I own your lovely ex-CDX2 now?
Have just discovered this whilst I'm sitting right here in Billy Vee having the PIC updated before I take it away

Small world!
On a consolation note, when I first got my CD5, the fuse blew when I first turned it on and had to go get a replacement as well! Frantic couple of hours that was!

'scuse me, but shouldn't Naim ship a few spare fuses if the dam things blow so easily?

Minky,
all is 4given...

Well Graham's was able to help me out this morning. I picked up a couple of fuses for the princely sum of 50 p each. Bizarrely (probably my neuroses), the CDS3 sounds better after its "nap".

While it is supposedly fairly rare for a fuse to blow, I think always keeping a spare to hand will be a good policy from now on.
Don't worry Minky, I never took your advice seriously, and could see it for the joke it was. I was about to post back further whimsy about maybe soldering a copper bridge in place would work better, but after your chastisement, decided the better of it.
Steve, good luck with the CDX2! It is an amazing player, and I can assure has been treated with nothing but the greatest love, respect, and consideration.
As always, thanks to the Forum for its support in a moment of need!

Cheers, it's playing Strauss at the moment whilst I'm installing software on a pc (boring) and it sounds wonderful.
My lodger (best mate) who I allow to use my hi-fi was playing a cd before I got in and was absolutely astounded, not that he had noticed the subtle phsyical changes like being a damn sight bigger! He thought it was imagination that it seemed bigger *LOL*
Thanks again for upgrading and allowing me the option to upgrade myself and Billy Vee can start someone else on the righteous path by selling them my old CD5.
Steve.

This is slightly worrying, as I have now borrowed an XPS2 from my dealer twice and both times the internal fuse has blown. This has never happened on my XPS. Is there any reason the XPS2 should be more susceptible to surges/switch-off?

Please refrain from attempting humour in the future as it far to hard to detect and indeed may result in personal injury, death - or worst of all, damage to equipment!

No,no,no Richie T! The correct thing to do is wrap the blown fuse with aluminium foil and reinsert it into the holder!

P.S. I've actually fired people for doing this with sensitive electronic equipment.

Hey, I suggested a little nail. Not eight inches of hardened steel, just a tiddler (a panel pin). This is the thanks I get ? I'm doing my best under a great deal of pressure here and I'm not even a scientist.

Sorry Minky, i did not understand you meant a 5 amp rated nail.

I managed to blow a fuse on my Densen B300XS power amp - it was caused by attaching the mains lead whilst the amp was switched on.
How gutted I felt until I discovered that the Densen has a holder in there that stores a spare fuse. A few seconds later normality was restored.
I notice that my CDX has a holder for a spare fuse right by where the fuse is slotted. Why oh why can't they stick a spare fuse there?

It would make sense, and only costs a few pence.
Regards,
Steve.

Unfused boss!
Firing someone for botching a fuse is a bit ott I think. A verbal warning would/would have suffice(d), surely not?
I only use the correct fuses now despite an experiment about a year ago that did yield better sound quality.
My Power amp escapade made me shudder to think what would have happened had I messed with the fuse rating beforehand.
People can learn from their mistakes, or do you enjoy having a high turnover of staff?
Regards,
Steve.
