PS3 as a DVD player

Posted by: Wazza69 on 02 July 2008

Hi Guys,

I was thinking of selling my Panasonic EX77 Freeview HDD/DVD Player as I now have Sky HD and getting a PS3 to play DVDs (and Games of course). My main concern is the noise that it makes whilst playing movies as I can’t hide it away. Is it very distracting?

Thanks,
Waz

Wazza69, i don't find my ps3 noisey, in fact compared against the x-box 360 it seems totaly silent.

My son's PS3 is virtually silent and doesn't get warm in the slightest. In contrast his X-Box 360 sounds like an old air conditioning unit.

The original 60GB PS3 was variable in its noise depending on whether it had a Chinese or Japanese fan in it. The ones with Chinese fans were very noisy indeed (likened to a vacuum cleaner). I don't believe there's an easy way to verify which one you've got. It's pot luck. The latest 40GB version seems to have resolved this problem and PS3s are generally very quiet. Of course the 40GB versions can't play SACD and have only 2 USB ports at the front instead of 4, and they don't have the card readers of the original machines.

In the US they have an 80GB machine which does play SACD I believe. I do not know if those are quiet or noisy, but I suspect that since the US always gets the cream of the products, they're probably quiet.

My PS3 is deadly quiet and the PS3 is practically the best bluray player on the market since it is all software driven and get updated often. It is a living machine and will NOT be obsolete Big Grin

You can recode any of your DVD using the divx format and replay on the PS3. It's easy!

He's basically talking about ripping the content of the dvd's that won't play, due to region restrictions, in a PS3 and then burning them onto blank discs in a different (and to my mind, inferior) form.

Frankly I can't say I'd be too enthused about doing that 143 times for the number of non-local region discs I have!

Tuan, does divx allow for full surround sound transcription? I thought it only allowed stereo.
