Can anybody explain how Google does this?

Go to www.google.co.uk, search on "fuckwit" and click "I'm feeling lucky".

I don't know the man but: wow, such a good intro!
We could try something like that with some of our politicians as well.

These guys have a problem.
Using the search engines is free and voluntary. Over time people use the search engines that serve them best, ie. give them the most relevant results.
Since Google adopted their 'page rank' algorithms, other engines, notably Yahoo, have copied them. The algorithms that were used before Google's page ranking were much too easy for web designers to spam (fool the serach engines into giving their sites better rankings than they merited).
When there are better engines out there than Google, people will use them. At this time, Google's algorithms are the best there are.

I agree with you in part. I use the internet (including email) in the knowledge that it is not a private medium and that my only real protection from prying or interest is the sheer volume of traffic involved.
But then again, the most respected entities and identities on the internet are upfront and clear about how information is used and how it is collected.

Deane,
I don't really understand what you are saying with these two statements re. Google. Please expand.
Thanks

To attempt to answer the original question ...
Google doesn't do this. An examination of the source code of the page shown reveals that there are no instances of the word "fuckwit".
What has happened is that a site or sites has linked to this page with the word in the link text (ie. fuckwit found here). The linking site probably has a reasonably high Google page rank (or there may be a number of such sites). When Google finds that an important (popular) site or sites links to a particular page using a certain text, it assumes that the page is relevant for people using that search phrase.

Perhaps I built too much meaning into your stating "these guys have a problem"? I looked through their site that mounts a polemic of sorts against Google and was trying (too hard perhaps?) to start a discussion about their criticisms of the way that Google collects information and runs "perpetual cookies" etc.

I imagine that many people would be surprised if they realised the vast number of sites that collect information on us using cookies.
You could get your browser to ask you for permission each time this happens but without that permission your Internet activities would be severely curtailed.

Use of data.
If you are a bit worried about Google's policy on privacy then either don't use the products (Google, Gmail, Gmap, Gbrowser and Gspot?) or use them and take steps to lessen any problems. If you are woried about the cookie and you still need to use Google then why not use a browser that automaticly deletes cookies after a session has finished; use a proxy site when visiting Google or do both?
If the USA (home of Google) is not where you reside then you just have to make do with whatever data retention or data mining laws that exist in the USA but as Google is now a PLC you could always buy some shares and attempt to change their policies.
Other tools.
infospace
gigablast
ixquick
kartoo
TGGoogleBrowser
musicplasma
music-map
By using a mixture of meta searchengines and a few other bits and bobs you can discover quite a few things without using Google 100% of the time.
