I’ll hold my hands up; I like whiney (new) indie rock. However, I’ve relatively recently discovered dance(?) music but I find it quite hard to find my way into the labyrinth of different styles. I’m never quite sure where to look or what to look for. I have tried asking in specialist record shops, but staff in there are generally waaay to cool to help you. So I thought I might try the safety of an anonymous internet forum:

My favourites so far:
Boards of Canada - music has the right to children
Plaid – rest proof clockwork
Royksopp – Melody AM
Sasha - Involver

Maybe you could do a sort of beginners guide to dance music (please)? I’d really like some recommendations in styles you mentioned such as Acid Trance / Drum'n'Bass / Extreme power electronics / Schaffelfieber (Huh??).

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

Sorry for the delay in replying

Where to start?

I would try to find a sympathetic record shop to try out a few CDs / records, perhaps Smallfish in Old Street Shoreditch?

BoC / Plaid / Royksopp are fairly relaxed ambient style electronica. There are thousands of artists in this area, try Ulrich Schauss, The Orb, Gas, Arovane, other artists on Warp etc.

Acid Trance, there are many different styles , German, Prog, London, Squat Key artists / labels are Hardfloor, DJ Scot, Emmanuel Top, Kai Tracid, Kektex, D.A.V.E the Drummer, Labels hrdflr, Routemasters, Cluster, Prolekult, 4x4, Nitric etc.

Extreme Power Electronic are the edge of industrial, with artists like Merzbow, KK Null, Powerfield, Whitehouse, Blackhouse, Throbbing Gristle, Thee Grey Wolves, Organum, Masonna, etc. The Stoner Rock of electronics.

Schaffelfieber ( Shuffle fever) is the New Sound of Cologne Germany, on labels such as Kompakt, Aufrieb, Profan, D'Jungle fever, Pop, and amny many others. The two Schaffelfieber compliations are good places.

Durm'n'Bass is another huge area, I like fairly hard beaty tech step, like Bad Company, Ed Rush, Don & Roland, Calyx, Twisted Individual, Decoder, Optical, Digital etc.

Try downloading a few samples to see what you like! wwww.amazon.com has samples, as does http://www.juno.co.uk

Good luck searching

David,

Great, thanks; The Warp label was more or less my initiation in (ambient) electronica; I’m now ready for more obscure stuff. I’ll work my way through your recommendations.

Incidently, I have just found my ‘sympathetic record shop’ and very local it is too; Disque on Chapel Market (N1). They haven’t got a large stock, but will order anything.

Rgds,
Peter

Hi Peter

I keep forgetting to check in here, as the other place is more likely to check the stuff that I like.

DS really is the man when it comes to dance. I do like BoC and Plaid, but I guess that is right at the dancey end of what I like. Still, if you like them, off the top of my head, you should check... Mum, Lali Puna, Psapp, Hood, Savath & Savalas. and maybe the new Radiq album. I am dead busy atm, so I tend to rely on the Boomkat news letter on friday afternoons, and just listen to everything on there. I usually find a good handful of albums I like. We'll worth signing up for, if only to cleanse your brain after the popbitch, holymoly, and b3ta friday onslaught.

Yes, Boomkat and the physical shop Pelicanneck are a very useful source.

I am awaiting a couple of new vinyls from them, arriving tomorrow hopefully!

DS – Not disputing your taste (we all like what we like), but why slam the things that aren't your thing? I'm not a dance music fan myself, but I wouldn't go off on it, either.

Eh, no matter. Just mildly curious why one would decry a lack of appreciation for one's preferred music, while simultaneously deriding everyone else's.

PS - No offense intended, and apologies if the above quote is out of context. I didn't see the original post.

A few artists to try:

Cinematic Orchestra - Chilled jazz(ish)

Leftfield - great to test the system

Ammoncontact - chilled new cd

Nova Nova - Memories - french deep technoey stuff

Fila Brazilia

If you have sky tv tune in to music choice at anytime and they have 10 free music channels on constant stream - i get most of my tune ideas from there

David - Ordering on line; I try not to do it, far to easy to click 'add to basket'. Not always successful though, still have 10 Lp's, I think, on backorder with Sister Ray. Just hope they don't all turn up when I'm not at home and my wife is.

Jason, Thanks, got some leftfield already, will try the rest

Jay, Chill; try some ambient stuff (insert smiley)

Thanks Peter; well chilled, actually... makes me no nevermind who says what, TBH. Music's too good just now to worry 'bout things and stuff. Sometimes I just get curious.

Jayd,

We are all indeed entitled to our own opinions and preferences, but I know mine are right!

Perhaps I am frustrated by the lack of discussion of new and innovation music genres, and the concentration on safe Dad rock (is that pergorative term?) Whiney indie rock (I forgot to mention my other pet hate, Hairy Old Wank)

One man's Doobie Brothers is another man's DJ Koze, so be it, as long as I don't have to listen to the former.

Yours, togtherness in music,

DS
