I dig Radiohead

Posted by: Shawn Griffin on 02 December 2009

Believe it or not, I had never listened to Radiohead until a few months ago. Wow. Started with "In Rainbows" and went backwards. "Kid A" is a masterpiece. I even love Thom Yorke's solo album.
If I like them so much, what else do I need to hear?
Thanks in advance,

Shawn G

Well now. Listen to everything. It isn't a huge catalogue. If you like Kid A, everything else is kind-of a bit "easier". Hail to The Thief is probably the one I listen to least.

What can I say. Welcome to the club.

Well Shawn, better later than never I guess Winker I confess I prefer their latest albums, "In Rainbows" being my favourite. Like Winky said, listen to everything, you'll find something great in every album.

The Bends is superb in fact I'll just go and put it on....

Avoid the first album, although worth having for 'Creep', a disappointing album otherwise.

'The Bends'(1995) is very good, quite a rocky album.

'OK Computer' (1997) took the ideas from 'The Bends' but is a lot more sophisticated, many people's favourite album by them.

'Kid A' (2000) took a different and more challenging direction, probably my favourite album by them.

'Amnesiac' does little for me, and sounds like 'Kid A' outtakes, but some people really like its rawness.

I haven't got into the last two albums, they didn't seem to offer anything new.

I have seen them live twice, the first time in 2003 (Manchester), and really enjoyed it, the second time in 2006 (Blackpool) and did not enjoy the concert at all. The latter is probably because my tastes have moved away from the band, the friend I went with loved the show.

Their live album is not worth bothering with, although there are some great recordings around from their appearances on 'Later' and from the broadcasts of their 'Glastonbury Festival' performances.

Agree with most. The first album is not nearly as sophisticated as later efforts, but does lead into them on a smooth trajectory. HTTT isn't my fave, but I thought In Rainbows was a stunning return to form. OK Computer is where a lot of people find comfortable compromise between the more accessible stuff and the more challenging stuff.

I have the "Live from The Basement" video footage of them playing the album tracks live, too and it is well worth getting (iTunes?). I don't mind their live album, either.

Totally agree that there are some great clips around from festival shows. Try yootoob for a start, but searching elsewhere might turn up some better quality stuff. They did a DVD of film clips of singles that is perhaps for completists only.

I've also seen them twice. Sydney (about 2003?)and Vancouver (fairly recently). I loved both. I had better seats and there was better sound in Sydney, though.

Thanks for all the replies. I must add that I've pretty much wore out all there albums in the last couple months. I also have the "Live from the Basement" video and love it too. My favorite is "Kid A" followed by "In Rainbows"/"OK Computer",and "Hail to the thief. Amnesiac has some great tunes(Pyramid song etc.) but doesn't seem as strong as the others. There first two albums are good but I like the newer stuff better. Eraser is growing on me as we speak.

If I like these guys so much what other bands should I look into?

Shawn: I wish I could answer that! Are you in the US by any chance? If so, take your chance with Pandora (http://www.pandora.com).

I think Doves would be worth trying of you like Radiohead, judging by a lot of friends who are into them.

Some might also suggest Muse, but I think they are very different, far more intense, or hysterical, depending on your viewpoint.

Shawn

You started on a great album, In Rainbows is superb IMO. I also have The Bends, Kid A and OK Computer. OK Computer is many peeps favorite album but its my least played of the four I have.

Yeah, I'm from the states. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. One of these days I'm going to get a turntable and run out and buy some Radiohead on vinyl.
Thought I would mention I'm listening to some The Mars Volta right now. Anyone who hasn't heard them should give them a listen.

I saw them first in the mid- 90s (and they played Creep!); again in about 2001 or so, and again this year. Every time they were superb. In Glasgow Green this year they played Paranoid Android as the rain fell (definitely one of the best ever performances on Later)... I've seen many bands over the years, and although I'm one of those people they lost along the way (I prefer the earlier albums) I still consider them one of the best live bands I have ever seen and overall a truly great band.

Fabulous on vinyl.
