High Quality Downloads

Posted by: ryan_d on 25 December 2007

Hi all and a merry christmas to you all. Just wondering if anyone knows of any sites that do high quality downloads for music rather than the usual 128b trash that you get.

I know of the Linn site but its the only one i know of. I've done a search over the net but have come up with nada.

Hi Ryan

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Depends on what sort of music you're after.

Rough Trade and Pure Groove both do downloads at 320kbs if that's any help

Thanks Steeve, I mostly listen to rock/alternative, but have a fairly eclectic taste. Finding classical or jazz does appear to be easier than rock/pop stuff.

I've been keeping up to date with the whole server thing and would probably go with a computer based system but I don't see the point of doing that if i still have to buy cd's. But if I could download them then it makes far more sense.

Yes that's true - I don't know of any sites that do CD quality for the type of music I listen to. There are a couple of artists I like who have only released stuff on 7" singles so far so, in addition to buying those, I've downloaded their tracks to save faffing about with making copies from vinyl to put on my iPod. Otherwise it's still CD (or vinyl!) for me. Let us know if you find anything!

Those nice people at NAIM do them now.

They do what? The server or the downloads......I'm aware of the servers but they will be too expensive. You can build a computer based system for a lot cheaper and it can be really goo dsound quality wise if you get a decent dac.

It won't be AS good as my cdx2 but it won't be far away, and much cheaper to buy. I try to listen to vinyl for serious listening anyway.

All the best

Have a look at emusic.co.uk.

I still think there is a case to be made for retaining hard copies [stored away for safety once the files are loaded to a hard drive] of music releases, rather than using downloads via the internet, for very high quality transfers. Though I would hope that the despatch of the physical medium will follow the trend that is emerging of not using those terrible CD Jewel cases, but using nicely lined computer disc paper envelopes that are increasingly the norm with such as Universal {DG, Decca, Philips] on their budget multi-CD issies.

Yep that's what I would recommend however is the web site address not www.emusic.com.

I think both addresses get you to the same place. However, there is now a UK edition of the site and you'll find the downloads can be country specific as to whether they're available or not.

If you like live music try - www.archive.org/ and go to live music link. Choice of different formats, including FLAC. Quality of recording varies, but there are some soundboard recordings and 24-bit 96k if you look hard enough.
Charlie Hunter does some amazing quality live stuff if you are into it.

You could always look on the Usenet newsgroups, there's lots of FLAC stuff. There are a number of search engines such as "www.binsearch.info". Lots of copyright issues!
