The naim uniti

Posted by: garyi on 08 August 2009

A good friend of mine has gone on his summer holidays and I managed to blag his uniti!

So in preparation I set up the drobo to run a upnp server. In all this has been the most difficult thing. The good news is I have trimmed out some of the stuff I simply do not listen too so had the library back down to about 10,000 tunes. However the majority of them are apple lossless. Now as I understand it the uniti can play what ever the server will throw at it. It turns out fuppes UPNP server for drobo does not throw out apple lossless.

I have my music backed up to another harddrive so consequently I have been in the process of converting them lossless to the highest quality MP3. A long process really when dealing with a NAS. About half way there after most of the day.

IN the mean time I have put the uniti in and fuppes server is dishing up the 3000 or so tracks already as ACC etc.

The uniti has been hooked up with ethernet. No doubt wireless works but I spent a lot of effort putting gigabit ethernet through the house so may as well use it.

I am not using the amp section of the uniti right now. Its hooked up straight and simple with line out to the supernait with a shitty pair of monster leads. The purpose of this is to get as far as possible a feel for the sound compared to my current set up which is a mac mini outputing into an nvi and passed through to the supernait for stereo replay.

To this end set up was very simple, ethernet lead in, phonos out and a power lead!

On turn on I have reset all settings, said friend might be pissed off on his return but hey there you go. Obviously first port of call is the UPNP section and sure enough boom there is the fuppes server. Thank god.

Now because a lot of the music is lossless a lot of the music choices simply lead to empty folders and thats fair enough I know why this is. Also picture jpgs etc appear in the folders regardless, no doubt there is a setting in fuppes, infact I am sure there is to turn off pictures being picked up.

I also have a lot of NFO files. Which are created by XBMC media programme to keep info on the music. Again fuppes picks this up and in some instances I land up with the music doubled up as it reads the NFO files. Not the fault of uniti and something I can deal with from XBMC.

The remote is one of the best from naim, apart from their metal jobs of course. A good weight and the buttons make a nice solid press.

So how does it sound?

Well I am disappointed. Disappointed that my assumptions on digital replay has been blown out of the water. My belief that a mac mini banged into a supernait was the be all and end all has been destroyed by a streaming section of a multi device from naim.

Put into a single word this thing is awesome. I am hearing great stereo separation and some seriously nice bass, its got that lovely feel to the sound where you are confident in turning it up if you know what I mean.

Kind of gives me the shits really, as the simple belief that the mini was the best was easy and done with 500 quid haha.

Anyway here we go then, pick one up if you have been thinking about it. There might be a bit of work to get your music library done but otherwise its dead easy and sounds superb. In the mean time I shall use Max or XLD to import some music as FLAC and see how that sounds as this is uspported by fuppes.

One other thing the iradio is fantastic, I cannot get a reception round here so internet based is obviously great news.

I just need to decide if I deny knowing my mate when he is back from holiday...

OK nice softwares found for serving tunes, it pisses all over allegro and it costs 9 bucks.

Its called playback. You can use itunes meta data or add your own folders (sadlsy missing from allegro)

Much slicker interface as well. Highly recommended.

And for flac ripping MAX is 100 times better than XLD, it creates the correct folders, you have you paranoia if you want it and its approx 4 times faster.

Looks good but shame it's only MAC though

Is there any other type of computer then? Winker

Actually I ran into a bug, it displays songs on the uniti in a totally random order, they are aware of it though.

Trouble with allegro is the lack of FLAC and the fact it only uses itunes as a source. Now I am the biggest fanbois on earth, but even I am getting pissed at the lazy programming going on. Most of them are the same.

The biggest potential I though was Jinzora. A PHP web based thingy. Christ that took an age to install but seemed to give the impression I could push music via UPNP a bit like plug player on iphone. As well as great database building options. Sadly I cannot work out what its got to do with UPNP after all my faffing.

I think i have tried them all, basically getting to a lossless full quality rip that plays through Uniti. Apple Lossless is not supported in any fashion as far I can work out, if someone knows different let me know. So it leaves one with WAV, or FLAC. A couple of servers support flac, playback being one. And itunes supports WAV.

Flac importing on mac is not a pleasant process, max is as easy as it gets but still requires fetling for each disk and uses the oh so crap musicbrainz so baiscally could not find at leats a third of the disks I tried importing, no way I am self tagging. XLD took just shy of 30 minutes to import one CD, I can import and convert DVDs quicker than that.

I'll get there in the end, but my kingdom for apple lossless, this would have been so much easier!

One other thing and I hate to get all PCS on you but 320 is not good enough, WAV and FLAC are where its at.

Allegro has now decided to dish up the song after the song uniti says is playing.

Sigh.

Sounds as though you are having fun there Gary ! Smile
On the Max front , I thought it was just a case of dragging files in to Max and it converts them from Apple Lossless to Flac ?
I've just replaced my Sonos system with a Mac Mini , nothing to to do with audio quality but more to do with the ability to use Spotify premium , Songbird and BBC iPlayer . Keeps me happy .

Thanks for the write up on your adventures , very interesting .

I am having fun. None of these are issues persay just experimenting really.

Turns out the playback issues is down to how spotlight indexes the files, so they are actively working on that and also integrating with songbird as well which should be cool.

per se, gary Winker

BTW what do you recommend for converting WMA files on a Mac so they can be imported into iTunes?
Posted on: 17 August 2009 by garyi
For WMA files I would look here:

http://www.macupdate.com/searc...s=convert+wma&os=mac

Cannot say I have opened windows media player in many years let alone used it for anything so cannot recommend any thing specifically!

OK my final excitment Cidero for OSX will act as a control point.

So you have allegro running on one computer and the uniti in the corner, this software sees both.

Consequently you can play music from the uniti controlled by your computer, you can also build play lists!

Yea.

Now all I have to do is come up with 2k as I am about to be bereft of uniti.

I have a uniti for a week now. As i listen it likes a bit thin sounding. And if there will be a curtain over it. Will this be the famous burn-in period? Or will the power section be to less for my hungry speakers? Or is this the uniti in combination with my speakers?

In a view weeks I'm adding ( for a test ) a NAP250-2 on it. Lets see if it is still back wards instead of the famous upfront.

I was using the uniti with line out into a supernait so cannot comment on the amp section.
