Any news on the Uniti App?

Posted by: divuk83 on 30 March 2010

I know I'm a bit early as I think it was due for an April/May release however I just wondered if there was any news on this? Is there any screen shots, info on its features or even a release date to tease us with?

Cheers

Dave

PS if you need a beta tester for the app let me know Winker

Will there be a uniti app for the iPAD?
Posted on: 01 April 2010 by garyi
Neither here nor there really as its backwards compatible.

I look forward to the uber home remote control though which is actually in the works. i.e. an ipad with all your albums displayed in glorious colour plus full control of you home hifi/av/tv etc.

Shweeett.

I'm with Gary on this one. The iPad as a coffee-table accessory giving full control of everything is a very appealing idea. It's already a lock as my next music remote for my Mini.

may have already been said elsewhere, but...

'Apps built for the iPhone and iPod Touch are made to fit the small screen only. Upon launch of the Remote app, and all non-iPad apps, most of the iPad's screen is blank.'

There's a X2 key to double the app, but the graphics artwork etc, look terrible.

Nice big touch screen, and a little app in the corner, :-(

Yes I played with one the other day. You are better off with a simple iTouch. All previous apps are either the same size as ITouch, or they are magnified to fit the iPad and are fuzzy and distorted.

I have no idae if they will eventually make iPad version of all of these older apps. I doubt it.

Very lame.

Have you played with it yet?

Firstly there is the resolution/size issue noted above.

Secondly, i cannot figure out how to hold the damn thing.

At the store it is on a nice little "stand" that agles it at about 45 degrees. Good for a demo.

In real life it is too big to type on with thumbs and impractical to hold in one hand and type with the other.

If you lay it down on a table, or on your lap, you have to hunch over it. But if you prop it up with something for easy viewing it is awkward to type on.

Basically it only works well, ergonomically speaking, if you hold it which makes typing difficult.

I cant see any reason to get this over a small laptop. Apple makes a small Mac right?

I have demoed the iPad half a dozen times and I cannot find a way to use it comfortably.

All this talk of Apple products is interesting, but i'm about to get an Android smartphone, and in general i'm not that comfortable in being locked into Steve Jobs' walled garden. I prefer the idea of open source flexibility (for the same reasons I like flac files for example).

Does anyone else use non-Apple products, and have a need for remote applications on different platforms?

Tom,

Dont sweat the Apple aspect of the iPhone/Youch. It is a brilliant piece of machinery.

You can easily do third party/open platform whatnot on the other side of things.

E.g., I am using a component in Foobar that tricks the Remote App into thinking Foobar is iTunes. It works wonderfully.

From someone who has never really effectively gotten along with Macs, iTunes, and most of the Apple world, I can honestly say the iPhone deserves the Nobel Prize for Technology (if it exists).

FINALLY, the Apple/Mac platform and design intent have found a suitable home in this device.

I owned an Google phone running andrios before the iPhone. I used it for about 5 days. POS.

I know, I know, the iphone is a great bit of kit. I did actually try and buy one, but no one had any stock, so I gave up. I think it's overpriced though. New Android 2.1 looks very sweet. It's definitely maturing nicely.

I also use foobar. What is the foobar component you refer to?
Are you able to get the Uniti to pause UPnP streams using foo_upnp?

A separate thread on good foobar setup for Uniti might be worthwhile?

go to wintense for the Remote component. very easy.

regarding upnp. Yes i have tried it using plugplayer on my iPhone but cannot get it to not transcode. No matter the settings in Foobar I get a 320kbps on my renderer.

I am very new to upnp so there must be something I am not doing correctly.

Office Foobar streaming to iPhone, using the iPhone as the renderer. Works. Both on iPhone speakers and through USB into the Naim DAC. Unsure of bitrate/transcoding.

I will try a hires file tonight via the above to see if it lights up the HD light.

Office Foobar streaming to Hifi Foobar, results in 320kbps. Confused

Sure a thread on Foobar would be great. start it up!

Not so. $99 for a 8gb 3G (not s) is a killer deal. Even @ $200 it the absolute best VFM ive ever encountered on any high tech device.

Patrick, have a look at posts 659-661 on the foo_UPnP forum: foo_UPnP always transcoding to MP3

Tom,

Do you know what it means to change PlugPlayers settings? There is nothing to change on the iPhone side as far as I can tell.

thx,
Patrick

I think this refers to the streaming profile used in foo_UPnP settings (in Foobar preferences). Does your version of PP play flac? I believe foo_UPnP automatically chooses streaming settings based on capability of the renderer. I don't use Plug player, so can't really help beyond that. Sorry.

I think we're getting rather off topic here though

OK... I am not sure what Ive changed but I can get the HD light rolling using OfficeFoobar as server and HifiFoobar as the renderer with iPhone controlling.

Both with 24/96 FLAC and WAV are stuttering beyond belief. I guess hires via wireless doesnt work on my network.

I'm heartened to read you are using a HDX and have the iPad Paul...This substantially improves the chances we may indeed see a iPad native App...! Big Grin

Hi Paul,

Any release date yet? If not, is it still on schedule for June or will there be a delay?

Perhaps Naim is developing one for the latest iOS. iOS will be available to public on 21st June 2010. Let's wait and see...

p.s. Three things I'm waiting for:

1. Naim UnitiQute
2. Apple iPad
3. Apple iPhone HD
