Kitchen Radio/CD player re-visited
Posted by: Rockingdoc on 28 October 2005
My wife is insisting on a single unit CD/radio for the kitchen. The Tivoli will be regarded as a separates system by her. I don't think I could face the disgrace of having a Bose Wave in the house. I will have to listen to this thing so any quality suggestions will be gratefully received.

I heard the Bose and thought it was terrible. It was what one probably expected, tinny and hard on the ears.
I have recently bought a Tivoli DAB with stereo speaker and additional sub woofer. This is a really sweet sounding system, although a little care needs to be exercised in it's placement. It's not for loud volumes, but I wouldn't expect more from a small unit.
If your wife insists on something like a Bose Wave, I'd have thought a divorce would give you less headache than a couple of hours listening to the Bose.

The Denon DM-31 could be just what you need.
It's a shoebox size and sounds OK in my kitchen.

Doc
Don't be silly! Buy a Model CD and Model One (or Two) and tell her it's an all in one system.
Silly boy!

Alternatively, get an n-Vi, once the DAB module becomes available.

All of these sensible suggestions comprise more than one box, and therefore stumble at the "I'm not having another hi-fi system in this house" rule. (We do have three up and running, so she may have a point).
What I need to find is decent radio (she's showing an interest in DAB) with an integral CD player. I find it strange that this market doesn't seem to be catered for.
Help please, she keeps waving a Bose advert from a magazine at me.

Rockingdoc,
The Denon is actually a one box solution. CD & Radio in one small box.

I've heard the Bose Wave and can confirm that it sounds utterly crap. You weould be better off buying a ghetto blaster for 1/3rd the cost.

Got her to see sense. Pure Legato it is.

I understand chlorpromazine comes in a single box.
It could solve the psychotic delusion that the Bose looks good at the same time as sedating her sufficently to allow you to slip a rather nice separates system onto a cupboard, with just 2 wires coming out to the speakers!
50mg tds should do it.

Pure Legato - split into three separates!!
The Tivoli DAB with cd player is only two piece and even if you added the stereo speaker it is only three piece. Although more expensive, the Tivoli looks and sounds beautiful.
I don't understand Mrs Doc's reasoning, but that's got nothing to do with me.

I own one of these (Bang & Olufsen) and am very happy with it

Cost is circa £950 but the design and engineering is quality and the sound quite fullsome to boot.

She reluctantly went and LOOKED at both Tivoli and Pure. The Pure won on appearance (the Tivoli had "sharp edges and the wood was the wrong colour"), she certainly didn't listen to either. The Intempo was cheap and small, but looked nasty close up.
I liked the looks of the B&O but it was deemed too tall for the kitchen window-sill (and I don't think it does DAB). She's aware of the prices this time (unlike our real hi-fi) so this was a "ridiculous price".

But does it have integral speakers? The photos suggest it needs speakers added.
