Fraim - The Mana effect
Posted by: Steve Crouch on 13 May 2003
I have had my equipment stacked on Fraims for a while now, having changed from multi phased Mana. I have two stacks, one for Snaxo, 52 and CDS2, the other housing the power supplies and 135's. I used to have my LP12 on the top tier of a separate Fraim but because of the suspended floor went back to Mana wall frame phase 3. I have had a spare lower level Fraim (the substantial one consisting of 2 tiers) kicking around and had thought about putting this under the Source Fraim, using it like a Mana soundframe. I finally got round to doing it on Sunday, making sure to carefully move the 52 etc without actually turning anything off! The result - superb! Much greater dynamics and separation and more intelligable vocals etc. Just like a major source upgrade. Just like adding a Soundstage (or more!)to Mana. If you are fortunate to have a spare lower level hanging around I would strongly urge you to add a level in the Mana way. You will NOT be disappointed (well with suspended floor anyway).

My 17 Hi-Fi bases at the bottom of my Hutter tower works a treat too.

Steve don't take the fraim down this route please.
You unplugged your kit, you remade the contacts it sound better.
May I suggest double glazing the fraim next.
doh!

Pay attention, Gareth! Steve said "making sure to carefully move the 52 etc without actually turning anything off". The Fraim is excellent in that respect -- you can take down and rebuild a Fraim tower within 20 to 30 minutes, and if you're not moving it far, you can even keep the leads connected.
It's interesting that the idea of "phasing" a Fraim has been toyed with before, but no one seems to have tried it until now.

How about standing on the extra frame level in your listening position? My ears are really quite microphonnic, so I expect a rather substantial upgrade from this cheap tweak.

Luckily, Naim don't supply the bottom shelf (the obvious one to use for adding the most "phases") as a separate item...yet. Can't wait to hear from someone with a line of 6-shelf Fraims all with 5 empty shelves.
