I didn't realise this was out, anyway its now installed and so far seems very good. smoother operation, hopefully the battery will be better for it too.

Im just going through the process now. I'll only have it for two days though, hint hint!

First impressions: Quicker and smoother in operation. Plus the "backing up" operation when you sync now only takes minutes instead of hours.

Running multi apps. Intuitive?

Double click the home button. Not all apps seem to run in the background though.

Yep, that's sorted. And the app folders are a real blessing.

It's ok rather than great on my old 3G however I'm sure I will feel much better at 8.02am on Thursday!

I'm wondering how early to get there! I hate queueing for more than ten minutes, so I suppose 7.52...... Mmmmm, that's early for someone on holiday.

Apple name it iOS 4, by the way.

I have to stay over in London Wednesday night on business. Hotel, O2 shop and Pret all within 100 yards, so I may queue with a coffee.

Hope no one is using the TomTom Sat Nav program as currently it does not work with iOS4.
Posted on: 22 June 2010 by Tony Lockhart
Thankfully no. I just managed a few days in North Yorkshire without so much as a map and I'm still alive. I used the google maps app a few times, but only so how far I needed to drive.

Can't seem to get the double-click to work on the 3G - it brings up the camera as before. Only seems to work on the 3GS.
The 3GS seems much nimbler since the update though - I like the customisable home screen too

Just tried to install it on my iPhone3gs, failed to install with unknown error, tried to restore, failed to restore, unknown error.
It's totally fecked and I'm completely pissed off.
Anybody else had this error?

@ Tom, sounds like you need to install the latest iTunes 9.2.
Posted on: 22 June 2010 by TomK
Thanks Peter but already did that. Apparently Apple's servers have been swamped and are falling over left right and centre. If this happens while you're updating you're in trouble. The solution (?) I got was to delete all .ipsw files and start again. I'm restoring at the moment but don't know what's going to be there when it's done. I suspect I've lost all my saved emails and contacts for example.
Although I love my iPhone I detest everything about iTunes. It's just not fit for purpose as far as I'm concerned.

I have done restore a couple of times before due to one reason or another. What I have found that I lost voice messages, apart from that everything else is there except that you need to re-enter password for individual account, but that is expected.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Multi-tasking isn't available on the 3G.

It's alive again, apps and contacts apparently intact but a totally random set of unread emails in my inbox. Apps I'd previously deleted are back. A mess but it could have been worse.
Not good enough from Apple though. This was a massively anticipated upgrade and they've fecked it up. Did they not expect a high level of uptake as soon as it was announced?
I blame myself of course because I've been in this business long enough to realise that early adopters are either adventures or idiots
The iPhone has reignited my enthusiasm for techie stuff so it can't all be bad.
But all of you out there take care and wait a day or two if possible.

Do a back-up prior to doing the upgrade so that you have something to fall back on. Also turn it onto airplane mode whilst you do it so incoming calls etc. won't disrupt the process. Doing the process on a laptop would probably save any power cut problems too.

That had all been done and I've now been able to recover. The problem was at Apple's end and a corrupt .ipsw file was screwing things up.
All I need to do now is get email working again. What a fiasco.

WEll I have been backing up my iPhone 3G for about 1.5 hours.
Typically it only takes about 2 minutes when I sync.
Not sure what is taking so long..... and i havent even installed the new OS yet....

Mine is synching as I type.
They gave me £232 for my year old 16Gb 3GS.
They were giving out free pastries, fruit juice and newspapers to the queue.
Can't wait to be able to use the thing now!!

Strange, I put iOS4 on, and TomTom has been working OK.
Actually I did have an issue with it going back to home screen when I pressed a recent destination, but I though that was me being cack-handed
