Hawkwind - BBC4 30th March

Friday 30th March 2007, 21:00 to 22:00
Hawkwind - Do Not Panic.
The inside story of Hawkwind, one of Britain's wildest acid rock bands, who emerged from the Ladbroke Grove underground at the end of the 60s trailing the radicalism of the counter-culture in their wake, and have been a direct influence on punk, metal, dance and rave. The film includes interviews with some of the band's enduring legends, including bassist Lemmy, writer Michael Moorcock, founder members Terry Ollis, Nik Turner and Mick Slattery, and former managers Doug Smith and Jeff Dexter.

Now that's more like it from BBC4 - I'll be sure to tune in for some Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music. Hope there's some input from David Anthony Brock.

I shall watch that - thanks for the heads up.

I emerged from the Ladbroke Grove underground myself once. Having taken the Metropolitan line from Whitechapel.
Sorry

Tits oot for the lads?!?

Saw them many, many moons ago when Lemmy was the bass player and Stacia was the naked dancer (well sometimes anyway). They had the vertigo label backdrop I was so pissed out of my head that my friends had to hold me by the legs as I was hanging over a balcony.
also
used to work with Nik Turners sister and let me tell you she was a real babe. Think I am getting sexist in my old age.

I had almost completely repressed my hawkwind habit till 'You Shouldn't Do That' surfaced on bbc 'life on mars' series.
as the music grew her indoors and i had allsorts of flashbacks from loons to platform shoes(she had no taste)
great website tells you all the music featured in each episode
the 70s rule
just look at clothes in the 80s

Truly BBC 4 is the world's greatest TV Channel ....
...I bought In Search Of Space on release (initially because of it's classic fold out cover) ...later I saw them at The Mecca Ballroom Sunderland during (I think)The Space Ritual Tour.
Andy Dunkley the DJ prepared the audience for "take off" for the preceding hour by playing mainly UA artists tracks interspersed with "50 mins to lift off" "20 mins to lift off" etc. I remember Man records were played a lot (fine by me as I loved Man and still do)
..Alas no Stacia as I think she wasn't allowed to dance naked at any Mecca ballrooms (?)
I also have the rare Greasy Truckers double live album which incs The Hawks along with a silent track entitled "Power Cut" (because the album was recorded during the 70's Miners strike!)
Hawkind were very loud and didn't play "Silver Machine" ...How many other bands wouldn't play the one song all the audience would recognise?
After Quark Strangeness and Charm I have to admit to losing interest ...so I'm open to advice of what later albums I should cock an ear to ....

Wow Jet (what a name), I was just about to post about Space Ritual because in a headblast mood tonight I pulled it out of my collection and grooved to what I remember and what I missed. I remember being introduced to this heavy dangerous thing called Hawkwind by a heavy dangerous Spanish girlfriend of my older sister when I was about 15. It was Space Ritual with the total fold out cover. I was amazed and awed and the music was such a total envelopping thing that felt like another world to me then. The opening chords of 7by7 still send a tingle down my spine. That's what I remember and what I still feel. But the "what I missed" thing was because I was 15 and that was already 1977 and I never experienced being with Hawkwind live until they had changed into Hawklords, so I never experienced the Space Ritual thing. One of my biggest "I wish I had been there"s But you did experience it.
What on earth was it like?

Graest Truckers is superb, also for the Man Track "Spunk Rock".
Siver Machine may not be on the album but it was recorded at the gig as it is the single(label info gives same date and venue), heavily edited and re-recorded vocals by Lemmy though.
Wonder where the master tape is and if they will release full concert?
Mention of Stacia!!
Here is a link to photographer Jorgan Angels, took loads of photos of bands in seventies. Some very intersting photos of Alice Cooper as well!!!!!

Levitation
Posted on: 26 March 2007 by Nick Lees
Live Chronicles (basically The Black Sword live), Xenon Codex and Electric Teepee are all very good, though they're not as heavy as early Hawkwind and Electric Teepee has a nice blend of Electronic stuff on it.
Levitation is good (and novel having Ginger Baker on drums) but I prefer the previously mentioned. Just.

..Sorry mate but what I meant was Silver Machine wasn't played at the Sunderland Mecca gig I attended ...and you are right Man's "Spunk Rock" was excellent
....I wonder which Man albums have ever been re-released on CD? ..I'm pretty sure my favourite album of theirs "Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day" (with it's mega Welsh band's family tree fold out cover) has never been..but mebbe's "Rhinos Winos and Lunatics" has been?
I also have the rare 10" Live at The Padget Rooms Penarth which also incs Man ..Thinking about it UA Records didn't half put out some collectable stuff out in the 70's!
and er' sorry ....I was forgetting this was a Hawkind thread!

.....As I mentioned the whole gig was set up rather like a journey through space (which sounds very naff but made sense at the time!) The aforementioned countdown sequence kicked it all off ....various "sound generators" swirled + bleeped (much like the Space Ritual live album) and the light show was way beyond what other bands used at the time.
...Robert Calvert added his stentorian voice overs at various parts of the set ..and like I said it was bleedin' loud!
....If I haven't remembered that much it's because it was 34 years ago!...

As far as i know all Man albums are available, however, in Autumn look out for a remastered set of releases of all the classic albums, hopefully with good bonus material.
Christmas at the Patti was the 10" release, with Ducks Deluxe,Help Yourself etc, Live at the Padget was a limited edition 12" release- both worth having

Yeah I've got The "Patti" album as well ...as well as Hawkwind's original "Urban Geurrilla" single which was banned soon after release - due to controversy at the time re the IRA bombing campaign in England

Mad as a box of frogs. Or should that be stoned as a stone.
No one really talked about the music just what was happening all around, strange.
