IBL and SBL crossovers

Posted by: mangold3000 on 29 April 2003

Good afternoon!

I have a kind of a silly problem with my pair of IBLs.
I bought them second hand for a phantastic price, but as they were out of an active Naim sistem, they came without crossovers.
The seller added an extra pair of x-overs out of IMF speakers to the IBLs and told me of satisfying results.
As I never heard IBLs with the original x-overs I cannot share his opinion. Now I run the IBLs - please laugh - with SBL x-overs, which aren't too bad at all. Compared to the IMF ones they are far better.
I run the speakers on a CDX/NAC72/Nap140 sistem. Makes that any sense at all?
My question is:
What is the difference between IBL and SBL x-overs?
Should I watch out for a decent pair of complete IBLs
or can I somewhere get second hand original IBL x-overs?
Any offers are highly welcome?
Thank you and
Cheers

hello casper

i would stop immediately using speakers with wrong crossovers. it's not only a question of sounding better or worse. every chassis has it's own frequency range. with a false crossover you could let frequencies out of range through and damage the chassis! Frown

i don't know, but i bet even sbl's have a different crossover point. their bass chassis is bigger. this means, it does't go as high as the smaller ibl bass, so the crossover point should be lower, so your tweeter could be damaged by becoming too (much) low tones... (very theoretically) Smile

the possibility of finding a s/h ibl crossover for a speaker discontinued '96 is small, good luck. but when i asked naim about 2 years ago, they had every spare part for ibl's, except the foam-grilles. so contact your dealer or naim directly.

happy listening

Adrian

Casper,
i have used my IBL w/ a SBL PXO (my IBL PXO was@NANA for a A5 rewire) at decent levels w/ no problems.
the SBL PXO hung loose, unattached to the IBL rear (it's A5 being shorter than that of the IBL PXO).

i'd hold of using the IMF PXO not knowing how it's type/order/power-rating interfaces w/ the IBL drivers.

email naim for a definitive reply...w.r.t their PXO differences.

-rohit,
I use the SBL XPOs exactly as you do. I guess as long I cannot get original IBL ones, I will continue to listen like that - better than buying other speakers instead.
Thanks for your reply

Thank you guys for replying.
I will try to get a pair of IBL x-overs directly at NAIM AUDIO.
But don't hesitate to offer me yours.
