Sara Problem

Help

One of my linn Saras has developed a fault. At low frequencies it really buzzes and farts badly. The front B200 looks fine and I can't detect any obvious damage so I suspect it's the rear B200. Anyone tried to remove the drivers and is it possible to seal them up again. Any help very gratefully appreciated. Iv'e replaced them with my Kef Cresta 2s but it's not the same. Help Help help.

to my Saras years ago (twice) I think the gap between the drivers may be a vacuum. My dealer said at the time that it really should be done by Linn.

Somehow I doubt that.

Sounds like it could be a crossover fault. Problem is I don't think Linn are interested enough to fix them anymore.

Only thing I can suggest is ringing round dealers who have had experience of the Saras to see if anyone is skilled enough to take them apart.

Sara's...er...seal has likely been broken. You haven't left any other dirty little speakers alone in the room with her now have you? Those wee Kans can be nasty little feckers if you let them.

One of Sara's two outer driver mounting seals, or less likely her inner driver seal (or heaven forbid, her...um... enclosure itself), has developed an air leak.

Try gently pressing her diaphragm in using all of your fingers to evenly distribute the pressure and carefully hold it in for 10 - 15 seconds prior to releasing it. If the cone returns to its rest position quite slowly then the seal around the driver and the seal around the drivers mounting ring are likely intact. Although having said that, even a very small leak can make itself heard when Sara gets to partying.

If, however the cone springs back quite quickly then either the outer B200s seal or that of the driver mounting ring around it that allows for access to the rear driver is leaking.

In either case try tightening up all of the exposed fasteners as the most likely cause of a broken seal is a loose driver or driver mounting ring. If it is a minor gap between driver and seal or seal and baffle then the mere tightening may solve Sara's gastronomic problem.

If all else fails then I agree with Steve B. that a competent established Linn dealer would be best suited to fully identify and correct the problem as Sara can be a complex lady. However, it wouldn't hurt to give Linn a chance via e-mail to service@linn.co.uk as Ivor may still have a soft spot for his daughter's namesake.

Thanks for all the help. Tightening the outer driver, which was remarkably loose, seems to have done the trick although there is still a slight buzzing/chuffing noise when listening to a test cd with spot frequencies and swept tones up to about 60+ hertz. It's no longer noticeable on music program. Tried to tighten the inner driver but they seem remarkably tight or I'm not using the right tools. Are the screws posidrive or philips?

Syd,

IIRC the fasteners are all Pozidrive although, depending upon vintage, they could be Philips (Pozidrive bolt heads have a small X pattern of indented lines at 45 degrees to the X shaped sockets).

It is possible that the residual 'buzzing/chuffing noise' is still emanating from the same driver that was 'remarkably loose' as its seal may need remaking.

On the other hand the inner B200 may be loose, in which case if you do decide to remake the outer seal anyway...

Hi Craig

What would I need to remake the seals as Iwould like to get the saras back to 100%.

Thanks
