Misheard lyrics

Posted by: JamieL on 30 August 2008

Following on from the lyricists thread, people here must have some good misheard lyrics.

From my favourite lyricist Peter Hammill, one that has always stuck with me is from 'A Louse is not a Home'.

I thought it said 'Oh rissole, rissole, rissole, rissole, rissole is me', but now am aware that it is "Home is home is home is home is home is home is me!"? That said if you listen to it again, the overlapping vocals do definitely have a touch of 'rissole' to them.

I also thought in 'Rubicon' it said 'It takes so very long to choke on the taste you'd sperm' which should be 'It takes so very long to choke on the taste you'd spurned'. Much less icky!

Another slightly disgusting one from Depeche Mode 'Enjoy the Silence'. I thought it said 'Pleasures rimming, soldiers burping' but alas it turned out to be 'Pleasures remain, so does the pain'

Live albums often have good ones, from Rush 'A Show of Hands' in 'Turn the Page' at the end of the first verse it does sound as though Geddy Lee sings 'We shake our heads at the Chinese' and not '..at the tragedy'.

That said, liking Karl Hyde of Underworld's lyrics, I sometimes manage to find a printed version, and discover that he is actually singing what I thought he was, and yet the lyrics are still brilliant. From 'Dirty Epic' he is actually singing ''Call me wet trampoline' she said today'.

Anyway, I would love to hear what misheard lyrics other have in their heads, or just a few bizarre correct ones.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin's famous 'Penny in the Gents'. Yellow Brick Road was a long time ago and a long time before he came out. The thought of cottaging was a very long way from my youthful innocence! ( As it clearly was from them too). I could't work out why the song had those words or, since it obviously did, why it was such a hit. A great song tho'

Misheard lyrics. Nup, not any more.

I thought you guys all had Naim gear

Red Face humm, you do have a point on the Depeche Mode track - that is not a clear cut "now you are just being silly" mishearing of the lyrics (I just pulled out that CD for a listen - mind you my gear was stone cold at the time)

I'm gonna runter you...! Eek

I must have thought there was a verb to runter until I was about 12 - I wasn't sure what it involved but I thought it sounded bad!!

Kaiser Chiefs - 'I predict a riot' was always thought to be 'Ice cream pariah' when listening to the alarm clock radio on a lazy Sunday morning. I guess the ears weren't tuned in yet.
