Demagnetizing an LP12!!!!!!!!

Posted by: jonni on 03 April 2003

Just had a crazy idea, or maybe not so crazy...
I remmeber the improvment when changing my magnetic cartridge screws for non magnetic ones.More open organic etc.Since a large part of an LP12 is magnetic (as far as I know the subchassis and bolts, and the cross beam, dont think the top plate is though)would demagnetizing these have any effect, or is it even possible?I know you can buy demagnetizer for nails and small items but would these work on a subchassis etc?
Of course you would need to remove the motoer and power supply first .Would the subchassis become remagnetized over time?
Am I crazy or stupid Razz or something else?

Jonni it's too late for April Fools.

You could try it all, but it won't be an LP12.

Hi all:

I tried demagnetizing my LP12 by wrapping it in a massive Tesla coil, à la the Philadelphia Experiment. Unfortunately, the whole damn thing completely disappeared and I had to buy a new one.

As a cheap and easy way of demagnetising, simply hold the item very close to a large TV or computer monitor which has been switched off for at least an hour. Then sitch the TV/Monitor on, the degauss coils will demagnetise anything that is held close to the screen.

Seriously this could work.I've found that metal racks has a bad effect on my stereo making it thin and harsh.Of course theres resonance involved as well, but think about that tiny magnet being pull by objects around it.If just changing the screws makes an inprovment then surly getting rid of every thing magnetic around it sould help. You wouldn't have a magnetic tonearm or platter would you?

You could always keep the record still and turn the chassis. Then it would be rotating in the earths magnetic field.
