Can anyone recommend audiophile ambient chill out music?
Posted by: Consciousmess on 25 October 2008
Hi I had to ask this brilliant community this question, as I love ambient chill out music in whatever format, but I'd love to ask the collective consciousness for any suggestions.
Many thanks!!

I don't know what you mean by *audiophile* grade chill out but here are a few. Buddha Bar series and Cafe del Mar offer good compilation CDs:
Kyoto Jazz massive:
BarGrooves Series:
Blank & Jones:
Chicane is always a good chill music:
And a lot from Naked Music Label:
Nude Dimension series are all downtempo chill.
Compost Label is another:
Compost Community is a compilation featuring benfield, Truby Trio, Kyoto Jazz Massive etc.. etc...

Pete Namlook. And at the last count there are 178 albums to choose from. I'd make recommendations but it would take me all night to type them in.
Try www.2350.org - an independent review site or www.namlook.de - his website.
My favourites are his albums with Klaus Schulze, Tetsu Inoue, Gaudi, Bill Laswell and Wolfgang Spyra.

Ambient is an interesting term. It is now widely used for quiet techno, but for those of us into Brian Eno in the 80s it means something much more abstract and ephemeral.
If you you are looking for a wash of gentle sound, without beats, than try:
Brian Eno - Apollo
Brian Eno - Thursday Afternoon
Davis Sylvian - Plight and Premonition
These albums are all superb recordings.

Of course Dean got it right, but as Jamie suggested, there could be more to it and on the same vein, my I suggest Jon Hassel ? Maybe Power Spot for instance ?

A fab, very laid back, cool, dark, down beat album with superb sound has to be Kruder and Dorfmeister: "The K+D sessions"

Maybe not exactly audiophile but brilliant nonetheless is the recent "Nah Und Fern" box set of the four Gas albums on Kompakt. There's a good piece about it on Boomkat plus samples.

Try this - from the late great Delia Derbyshire - a true genius - the first and the best IMHO.

..Mebbe's an obvious choice ..but on vinyl the bass is profound .....a darkened room is a must of course!

Can I ask what defines "Ambient Chill-out Music"? I've never heard of, let-alone listened to any of the records suggested here. What am I missing?

Enigma MCMXC a.D - best chillout album ever made imo, and the sound quality is superb, very audiophile!
Posted on: 02 November 2008 by Consciousmess
Hi Jamesfuge,
I have to say that I disagree with you regarding that Enigma album (the MCMXC AD), as I place its audiophile level at distinctly average.
Don't get me wrong, I love the tune, but I wouldn't rank it that high on the audiophile scale. There needs to be more punch in the lower frequencies and the transparency in high frequencies sound like a veil needs lifting.
Unless of course there is a high definition remaster I'm not aware of??!!
Regards,
Jon

i dont think its remastered its disc one of the trilogy set, i have both this and a copy from 96' and i think the trilogy one sounds no different from the original. i just think has such an open sound and pin sharp resolution, which fantastic highs, but i do agree the lows could be punchier

James,
I have to agree with you that it is a great CD. I just looked at your profile and I recall clearly my the phase in life you are at - you have a better system than I did at university; all I can say is stick with Naim as you upgrade as the equipment higher up the hierarchy reveals more and more from the discs!!!
Regards,
Jon
