Save BBC 6Music!!!

Posted by: Simon Drake on 02 March 2010

I'm sure you have all heard the sad news about BBC top dogg Mark Thompson confirming BBC 6music's planned closure. Its one of the few remaining GENUINE ways of exposing new music to an enthusiastic music loving (and buying!) audience. If you haven't given it a try yet, please do (while you still can), there is something for everyone!

Please join this facebook group and help keep music alive! http://bit.ly/bbc6music

This is very interesting indeed at putting in context what value for money 6 Music is...

Simon,

I would suggest that is is best to make your views known via the BBC Trust website. There is an on-line questionaire in which you can respond to the BBC's plans. I know I have.

Thanks Simon for the interesting graphic and Martin for the note about the Trust survey which I have just completed.

I view 6 as carrying on the Peel tradition to a large extent and it's closure is at complete odds with one of the Beeb's aims of providing "something distinctive and better than other broadcasters"

I do not normally jump onto bandwagons or causes but this survey really is a good opportunity to pen some constructive comments to the Beeb regardless of one's viewpoint regarding 6 Music.

Maybe with enough comments............

Yes indeed. The best thing you can do is actually write to them and complain if any of you have the time: trust.enquiries@bbc.co.uk

It is working!

From MusicWeek.com:

BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons has suggested that the Corporation could change its plans to close 6 Music and the Asian Network as well as several websites in view of public opinion.

Lyons said in an interview with The Guardian that if there was a big enough public response to the moves, he would ask management to rethink.

"If we find that... there's massive public concern that we need to take account of then we will go back to the director general to rethink the strategy before it's approved," he said.

The interview followed the news yesterday that the BBC is set to shut 6 Music and the Asian Network as part of wide-ranging cutbacks.

It was a decision that has prompted fury among the music industry, with AIM chairman and chief executive Alison Wenham saying that she is certain the BBC can be made to reverse the decision.

The public have reacted strongly too: the Save 6 Music group on Facebook has more than 100,000 members, while #savebbc6music is still the top trending topic on Twitter.

Artists including Mark Ronson and La Roux have also expressed their opposition to plans to close 6 Music.

I agree that there is some hope that this ridiculous decision can be halted. Lets all make some noise and see what happens.

I imagine that far more money would be saved by closing BBC3, which seems a complete waste of space.

Nigel, I trust you mean the TV channel BBC3, not BBC Radio 3?

I think he does mean BBC 3

However the logic they are applying to closing 6 Music could just as easily be applied to Radio 3 - low listening figures, minority interest etc

And of course there is a commercial alternative - Classic FM!!! (just as 6 Music listeners are being encouraged to Radio 2!!)

I hope that Radio 3 listeners will rally around the campaign to save 6 Music - because you might be next...

Agree in general, but BBC3 has produced one of the finest home-grown dramas for years, in "Being Human". It has filled the large, Buffy shaped, hole in my heart :-)

BBC2 - move Animal Park, Flog It, Diagnosis Murder and the like to BBC 1, scrap BBC 4 and broadcast the material on BBC 2.

Scrap BBC3 - use experimental slots on BBC1 and BBC2 - done in the past e.g. Play for Today.

Radio 1, 1 Xtra, 2, 4, and 6 - reduce to 3 stations.

BBC News Channel - one newsreader - deals with general news, sport, business and weather.

Match of the Day - one presenter, and if we must have punditry, one pundit.

Blue Peter - cut the travel budget.

Lark Rise to Candleford - only to be shown in prisons.

etc., etc., etc.

Cheers,
OW

BBC3, Radio 1 and Radio 1X would be no loss - not keen on BBC World or BBC Parliament or BBC News 24 either - also don't like chat shows or soap operas (except for the one by Ray Davies).

I agree with not having presenters/pundits on match of the day - just show the highlights and be done with it. Also when showing Ipswich games on the Football League Show there is no need to show the opposition's goals as these are of little interest and are hardly a highlight.

Simon, is it ok to include a link to the BBC survey - and is it the BBC Strategy Review that we should be responding to?

The BBC budget graphic is really interesting. The laughably-entitled talent budget more than covers Radio 6 - in fact, you can keep it for the price of a Woss and a Wobinson. Easy decision! And much as I love the football coverage, do we have to send Lineker etc to each foreign tournament to watch the matches on TV?

Rational bit - I do think R6 struggles a little to fill the day with worthwhile stuff so there may be a case for more efficient programming - but that is also true of R4 and its multiple repeats. How much You and Yours can the world bear!

thanks for reminder! here it is:
http://consultations.external....ltation/consult_view

need as many to fill this out as possible...hope it works!

i would personally love to see what would happen to 6music if they forked out to go 'terrestrial'. i would listen in the car if I could! and I know lots would.

maybe the solution is to spend more, not less!
Posted on: 29 March 2010 by Pigeon_Fancier
Thanks Simon - and agree. Not a lot going on the car radio. Footy, R4 and a few pirates.

Health warning - if you are prone to boiling blood, make sure you complete the survey while in an ice bath. The woolly thinking, contradictions and buzz words will bring out the inner John Humphreys!

Not sure why 1Xtra is immune - no comment on its quality but in terms of the principles set out by the Dear DG, it doesn't fit. There are dozens of stations in my area covering the same ground.

Just tried to get to the trust survey but can't. Hope this is a sign that they're being inundated!

Surely they could just get rid of Jonathan Ross and/or Graeme Norton. That should easily cover 6's annual budget.

Unfortunately I think my kids would be up in arms if they tried to axe BBC3...

I spent the bank holiday streaming 6music at home to try and do my bit! he best thing you can do is simply listen! Lets try and up the numbers!

It really is an amazing station. The best for new music discovery AND rediscovery of old classics!

Agree re BBC3, it does offer something...for someone....somewhere....I am sure!

Re 1 Xtra, although a lot of it might sound like mindless noise (even to me), urban music has become such an influential part of pop production, that the two are joined at the hip, so it is easy to understand how 1Xtra's figures are big enough to justify its survival. The crazy thing is that actually, 1Xtra and R1 playlists are often so similar - why bother?!

I received this update from the Facebook campaign;

Awards & Listening Figures-

It has been a fantastic few weeks for BBC 6 Music and The Asian Network. Not only did 6 Music’s Jarvis, and Adam & Joe, and The Asian Network’s Nihal pick up Sony Radio Gold Awards, but there was also the release of the RAJAR figures, with 6 Music surpassing a million listeners, a 50% increase since the announcement of its planned closure. It's now the most listened to digital station and 4th best value BBC station.

Much more of this and someone somewhere will seriously have to think again about shutting it down, budget deficit or not?
