The New Radio-2 Line Up
Posted by: Mike-B on 12 January 2010
OK lads, I see the loss of Wossy post has migrated to banter over the new R2 line up, so here is a new post to bang heads on re the new line-up.
IM(very)HO
But I am just a grumpy ol' git who thinks R1 is the sporn of the devil.
Chris Evans - the screaming ginger nut who I always (eventually) turn off - R4 news & CA is far more relaxing
First day he did better than I thought, but still has that annoying edge and maybe showing signs of artificial restraint or trying to hard.
Simon Mayo
Compared to CE, better
Compared to JW, doesn't come close
Let battle begin

I got to like Chris Evans' Drivetime Show & I thought he did pretty well yesterday morning. Totally different to Terry of course but that's probably a good thing.
I really like Stuart Maconie, and he's a Hillwalking enthusiast to boot! I rather dislike the bloke (name escapes me) who took over from Jimmy Young at midday.

Simon Mayo on R5 was just brilliant at times IMHO. He gets his guests to talk with subtle and perceptive questions, wether they are a right wing politcal hardcase or some fluff actress. He also does his homework and is well-informed. He seemed to have the knack of making the story unfold without making himself the story if you see what I mean.
I don't know how his R2 show will be structured but I'd be surprised if it was not excellent.

I really liked CE in the evening slot. Much better than I expected he would be when I first heard he was going to take over. Not sure he is right for the morning slot though and would much prefer JW.
Last night I caught SM for the first time. I only listened for 20mins but even that was too much. Some stupid quiz and two crap songs for my whole drive home. Not impressed. Put CE back IMO.
On the positive side, my commute is only 20mins long so I do not have to endure it for hours like some others.

Johnnie Walker Rules as far as I am concerned. A true broadcasting legend. He should be given far more prominence. His Sunday afternoon show, Sounds of the Seventies is fabulous to listen to whilst cooking the Sunday Roast. He has such a great voice and music knowledge.
I like Chris Evans and he will do well. I do not think he is as innovative as he used to be when he was on Radio 1/Toothbrush days and it is maybe not so calming for the mornings but still he is one of the best out there.
Just as long as they do not bring on Zoe Ball and some others who seem to get the holiday slots at the mo.
And more Bob Harris as well.
Glad Ross is gone. I am fine with him being a bit out there. Just don't like him being insulting/crude and up his own arse.

I think Johnnie Walker is doing as much as he wants to, I agree I would have liked him to do the breakfasts slot.
Chris Evans seemed OK from what I've heard.

Radcliffe & Maconie
Not quite as brilliant as the Mark & Lard shows late night in the nineties but nothing can touch it IMO
CE drivetime was fine. I couldn't believe it had been 4 years
TW got increasingly 'aged' over the last couple of years I think but I've been listening as far back as I can remember, 15, 20 years? So often though now he'd repeat himself a few times in a show as if he's not even said the thing the once and I found that really irritating...
How anyone can bear to listen to Steve Wright is beyond me. Just feeble.
Miss Parky on Sundays but MB does OK.
Did I mention Wogan's habit of repeating himself? Really irritating.

I reckon Alex Lester should be given the breakfast show slot - he makes me laugh - mad as a hatter - shame he has been put back even further into the night with Chris Evans starting earlier than Tel.
Poor old Sarah Kennedy will have even more to moan about having to get up earlier - won't be surprised to see her sickie day count increase...
Chris Evans is a great dj - really one of the best there's been. He'll succeed anywhere. I do think the drivetime slot suited him best and I'm not convinced about the dynamics of Simon Mayo whose surname rather sums him up. This is now a weak link in my opinion.
JW is in my opinion by far the best dj I have heard. He really ran out of steam before Evans took over the drive time show no doubt due to health problems at the time. His stand ins for tel have demonstrated he has got back alot of his voom vaavo and I wonder if he might regain an appetite for a more regular involvement - watch out in your rear view mirror Mr Mayo!!

Now that man should take over Sarah Kennedy as she is well overdue for the boot
