'Rodrigo y Gabriela'

Posted by: J.N. on 16 May 2007

It's taken me a while to discover this eponymous album from the said Mexicans, but it's an utter delight.

Very simple - they're both just playing acoustic Spanish guitars, which they use to produce all the percussive sounds too.

This is beautifully played and recorded 'guitar only' music, which flits around defined musical genres.

Their take on 'Stairway to Heaven' and Metallica's 'Orion' are woth the admission price alone.

Truly fresh and exhilarating stuff.

I just knew you'd like 'em John! Winker

In the sleeve notes they say they're not Flamenco, but they are a bit...

I saw them *from* the field - and they *were* bloody good. Well worth going along to if you get the chance.

Thanks for the recommendation J.N. - I may never have come across this CD without it! Very enjoyable. They also mention "Friday Night in San Francisco" in the sleeve notes which has been in my collection for over 20 years; a great LP. Have you got any other recommendations on a similar theme?

I think they are on the bill with Muse at the New Wembley in June.

Saw them last week at Shepherds Bush. My wife dragged me along and I wasn't really interested as had only heard their first album.
Bloody brilliant. I loved them live.
have now bought the recent album, good but nowhere near the live performance.

Wish I'd been there. The cd is in very regular use here: I took it to an open even at Audio T in Camberley last week and 2 guys wanted details of it so they could get it. Played "Stairway to heaven" on the all-the-5s sytem with Totem Manis. It was jawdroppingly good.

No idea what the numbers they played were called (apart from the Pink Floyd, Led Zep and Metallica ones) as I'd only listened to the first album once. They did lots of requests from the floor and the fans seemed to recognise them all. Gabriela was the impressive one as she really gave it everything, and she is the rhythm section.

Just got the cd+dvd today. The cover of Orion is amazing and very close to the original. They've obviously got a phenomenal grasp of their instruments and music on general.

Got both of the albums now, but they don't grab me like the gig did.
I hate music DVDs, don't know why, just weird I suppose.

I have the DVD version. Some really unusual music but most enjoyable.Another thankyou to Chris K.
What I liked was how they have got to grips with the Queen's English. Roll Eyes
