Mono button on 102

Posted by: Damian B on 11 December 2001

Hello all,

Well this is my first post in what seems like a long, long time (well over a year at a guess)!.

Nice to see some of the old regulars are still around (Matthew, Tony, Vuk, Pete, Joe to name a few!)

Anyway, onto the reason for posting. After having long wanted to, I finally managed to scrape together the cash to upgrade my trusty 92/90 combo to a 102/NAPSC/180. Got a good deal on these S/H from Infidelity (Cheers Peter!)

Very pleased indeed with the results (and the fact I now have remote control!) !

I have noticed though, that when I press the 'mono' button on the front of the 102 - this seems to act in the exact same fashion as the 'mute' button - i.e. all sound is cut. Is this correct (I wouldn't think so?) The 102 didn't come with its manual and I have forgotten what pressing this did on the 92.

Sorry if this is a daft question to return with after all this time...but I'm curious. Other than this I am extremely happy with the performance of the 102.

"mono" is helpfull when you're recording something; It is the exact message you are recording on your tape for instance;
I am sure some other people will explain you this better, but anyway, you won't need that function in your actual system.

Damian!!!

Feels like I just travelled through space and time.

Welcome back.

The "mon" button on the 102 is short for "monitor" -- useful when making tapes.

Any plans to stick around?

Cheers,

Joe

Hi Joe!

That clears it up (& thanks Charlezz) - for some reason I thought it was 'MONO' mode (although the thought 'what would the point of that be' did occur to me!).

Yeah - I shall try and stick around as much as I can red face)

is it as fun here as it used to be?

And why did Vuk get banned? (is he still banned - saw a few posts from him?)

Yeah, we're all still here. Hows it going? Still at Lotus?

Vuk is currently between bans, so he can answer this… (but don't mention the war…).

Please do.

One the whole? No, but largely because the signal-to-noise ratio has dropped. The signal itself can still be good. You just have to spend more time finding good posters and good threads. (If you like I'll send a list of posters to avoid ;-) )

The short, therefore misleading, answer is that Vuk threatened to use his computer skills to arrange a meeting between a fictitious disabled Afghani civilian, wounded by American bombing, and a forum member who felt the war on terror is justified.

So Paul S. banned Vuk for allegedly threatening another member and so it stayed until Vuk apologized and was reinstated.

Tony - Hi ! - it's going ok thanks - and your good self? Very pleased to see you like Kings Of Convenience. I was in Norway recently visiting a friend and got to hear of them this way. Norway has quite a number of decent bands around. I haven't got the KOC 1st CD yet - I have the new one 'Versus' which is excellent - thoroughly recommended. Another one on my list is Royksopp's Melody AM - have you heard that? What do you think? Lastly another band is Madrugada. I really like the stuff I heard although I'm not sure it's your kinda thing - could be wrong. Kinda stripped out, dark and moody, guitar based.
Not party music !

To answer your question - yes still at Lotus. Although it's very much just IBM now - Lotus is now just a brand - a 'pillar' of the IBM software Group (I'll always be a Loti at heart though!)

Joe - Oh I see. Ok, I can understand that I guess (Vuk being banned) - but I'm glad he has redeemed himself (sorry to talk about you Vuk as if u r not here!) as the forum would be distinctly less colourful without him!

Oh, and I would be very interested to see that list of posters to avoid - although I think I've spotted a few already ;-)

Jawed and Joel still around as well?

>> Jawed and Joel still around as well? <<

Jawed quit the forum after the first censorship incident. Joel sort of gradually drifted away without ever officially leaving but hasnt posted for ages.

Both have DBLs. Joel has three 500s. Jawed still has a shit CD player.

Nice to hear from you again, btw.

Ditto - belated re-welcomes, oh Ghost of Damian!

You have to be pretty flat to get a mono switch - 32.5, 82 or 52 spring to mind.

Congrats on the upgrade.

PS - Joe, how did you find that TIME reference - it was a feeling of rare web familiarity browsing thru it again...

Rico,

Omer was the one who found it, so all credits to him.

BTW, if you're feeling nostalgic you can check out other defunct sites with the way-back machine.

Hmmm.
Reading quotes like that I am always a little troubled. As I entered the naim universe (the not round world) a year ago I was very happy to find this forum.
Being a newbie my initial post were (and probably still are)naive and perhaps amusing for the "old naim chaps".
But the idea of being noise still troubles me.
As the forum members contributed in a very helpful and friendly way it seems I have the ability to utter "signal" now and then.
But as a newbie the identification: "old one = signal, new one = noise" pops up immediately in my still round shaped brain.
Therefore I ask for patience and tolerance as to my understanding signal is modulated noise, therfore without noise no signal.
Peace?

Damian,

in case you haven't found them, you can download a pre-amp manual from the Naim site.

cheers, Martin

Peace, bro.

I wasn't suggesting that the newbies are noise and the old timers are signal. Both are capable of lots of noise or lots of signal, depending on the individual or topic. I'm just sayin' that compared with my admittedly rosy memory of the old conference, there seems to be a lot more posts that add nothing to the discussion.

(By the way, I acknowledge fully that I haven't had anything interesting to post since the fall of 1997, save for the odd mullet picture.)

I take it that all of you have devoured the Encyclopaedia of Mullet, to be found at

You will not be disappointed.

More importantly Joe, what happened to the trekkie gifs that I've come to expect?

"signal to noise ratio" - I love it.

Cheers

Keith.
