I think this is just proof of the age old saying -

... I'm not sure if the stylus enjoyed that.

Which cart is on that SL1200?
Posted on: 24 July 2009 by Tonepub
depends on the gear and the mastering...

I posted a pic of a CD on my LP12 three years ago, or so.

But to be honest, I did not try actually to play it...

A Stanton 500AL MK1...Designed for cutting and scratching Big Grin.

Funny, when i speak to people who have no interest in HI FI, they all had one thing in common - They all prefer the sound and physical use of a vinyl. CDs are like most things built today - It breaks, the machines themselves, the cases they come in and the discs are so easily marked/scratched or peel...compared to vinyl IMHO? They are s**t.

Most i know, will be glad to see the back of them.

Hi 555,

Just trying to shed some light on this.

If i remember - you are on your second 555.
My CD5i is on it's second mech after three years little use.
my old CD3 is on it's third mech.

My landlord is on his forth Nad player with which he eventually put a hammer to after 5 years use all in all.
My son's Wii is on it's second mech after one year, i could go on and on...

I like CD when it works, but.......!
My Rega has out lasted the lot with five times more use.
I bet CD player manufacturers are rushed off there feet with servicing/repairs.

Hi Stephen

My previous post was FAO Fred Mulder.
The pic' is from Fred's X Files namesake, making a guest appearance on The Simpsons.
I think there is no answer to the question which sounds better,
except perhaps neither or both.
It struck me as highly ironic a forum member thus named asked this question!

Which sounds better depends on so many variables, as tonepub has pointed out.
Both CD & Vinyl, like all recording formats, have strengths & weaknesses.

Are CDPs more or less reliable than vinyl decks?
This also depends on many variables, not least the manufacturer.
My CD555 did break down after eight months due to a faulty door relay switch.
As Naim couldn't fix it within two weeks, they swapped it for a brand new unit,
with all shipping costs at their expense.

My most excellent dealer (James @ Tom Tom Audio) also went way beyond the call of duty to help,
even though this was during Christmas/New Year & he was on holiday.

IME Naim CDP owners have nothing to worry about,
due to the exceptional standard of customer service at HQ + dealers,
& the long term support of their equipment. Smile

Absolutely!
I cannot fault naim's and my retailer customer service, they were/are second to none! Smile

Simple for me. CD. There is so much music I listen to that is not available on vinyl.

I do not want what I listen to restricted by format so CD gives me the ultimate choice and to my ears sounds superb. I will buy a turntable soon though just cause I want one but would be more than happy to live without as I have done for the last 23 years.

Vinyl.

Chaps

I play my CD through the CDS3 and it is bloody good.

I also have a Garrard 401 with an Aro and a Loricraft PSU. Playing through vinyl is more of a ritual but I find it has a warmer more engaging sound.

The CD scores on convenience but the vinyl is more musical.

Both are good it has to be said.

Regards

CDs sound better on a CD player
Vinyl sounds better on a Record Player
Cassettes sound better on a Cassette Deck

Sorry to be controversial

Great clip BTW

The artwork is nicer on vinyl and the liner notes where artists thank god etc, can be read without spectacles, so vinyl clearly sounds like a better bet.

CD's fatal flaw is that artists aren't able to provide subliminal hidden messages - as recorded backwards in the run out of long players. That doesn't sound very good either (shoot your friends).

Finally, for the young and hip, a stack of cd's back at the flat looks a bit lame, whereas a wallfull of carefully selected vinyl (AC/DC carefully hidden away etc) is sure to impress the sophisticated lady. Which sounds promising.

Vinyl it is then.

Never fails to amaze me how vinyl extremists overlook the large number of sonically poor releases on the black stuff.

Living in a post CD world here!

If the music is engaging, I could not care less what the medium or means of replay might be!

I even find music on a Model One Tivoli radio is often very engaging.

No distraction idiocy of liner notes and wasted space on shelves with radio or H[ard] D[rive] storage, where I would rather have books.
