Opinions sought on new(ish) releases
Posted by: Simon Perry on 05 November 2003
Lately I have found the forum to be a very useful sounding board in warning me off making needless purchases of sub-standard over-hyped new releases. A recent example is the new BRMC (thanks to Alex Gerrard for that one).
So - any warnings regarding the following, which I am considering:
1. New Elbow
2. New Electric Soft Parade.
Cheers

Simon,
good thread idea... a lot of this is no doubt discussed in the 'last album purchased' thread but that's huge now...
Sorry cannot help you re the two you mention tho...

Thanks - I think I'll get the Electric Soft Parade then. I really like the very long track on the first album!..that's what comes of spending your teenage years listening to Pink Floyd.
Cheers

PS - 3 times in ONE week! They are good though -did you catch them supporting Mercury Rev by any chance (which is the only time I've seen them)

The Elbow album is quite superb (IMO). I have talked about this elsewhere but for me is one of the albums of the year so far.
I have their first album and I like it, but it doesn't really grab me in the same way as this new one. The songs are shorter (only one song over 6 minutes), and don't drift as much. It does tail off a bit at the end with the last 3 tracks being missable, also I'm not too keen on the first track, but tracks 2-8 provide 30 minutes of the best music of the year. Peaking with 'not a job' my favourite track of the year so far.
I think Minky commented that he really liked this album but after a month went a bit stale on it. I have only had this about a month but so far I still love it.

The Elbow album gets my vote too.
Didn't like the first one too much but the latest is superb. Don't miss out.
