Phono stage for a 282...

Posted by: andy c on 02 October 2003

Hi,
As part of my next batch of upgrading, I intend to change the K9 currently fitted to my Linn Axis/Akito with a dynavector MC (Dealer recommendation and a good price).
Obvious phono stage would be a stageline, but are there any others I should shortlist, and if so why?

Is it the £250 dynavector? I would look at swopping towards a s/h lp12 where serious improvements are to be had over the axis (as good as it is). Then the prefix becomes an attractive option.

I just theoretically spent more money than you maybe are considering. However this route offers a logical upgrade path in the future if thats where you want to go.

Simon,
I did consider this but my main source is CD now.
Hence the upgrade I recently made to a CDX2. The dynavector is a £480.00 model that my dealer has had part-exed and is doing me at a good price.

Mmmm Tom, thats about £300.00 more than the stageline....
May need to demo them then.... ah well..

Tom, did the PE mode drop the gain at all, relative to the original settings?

Thanks,

I find it more than a little strange that when you buy a pre in this price range from a company that once was in the forefront of the "digtal is bad" campaign you don't get a phono input Confused

Is it true that the latest pre amp (202, 282, 252) can't take the phono boards?

I can't understand why this is the case. A bad move if you ask me.

What were you using with your K9?

Sorry, but I still think that it's a very unbalanced front end to put a d17 mk2 onto an axis. Even more crazy to put it through a 500 quid phono stage! Deck first, arm second, cartridge third.

Just my 2p's worth.

Simon's right (nicely explained, too).

That would be the turntable equivalent of Alex's Opel Manta driver!

I've just been onto the Dynavector homepage and there is no P-75? They do have a head amp called a DV PHA100.

Has this replaced the P-75?

Greeny,

although the new preamps do not have provision for internal phono boards, they all have a powered socket which will allow you to run a Stageline without needing a separate power supply.

The only downside is that the Stageline costs about twice what a pair of phono boards would, but it does position you to upgrade with a separate power supply in the future.

cheers, Martin

I certainly agree with you. I can see the point with the 552, as at this price a seperate phonostage is necessary, but not on the cheaper models. I think it is Naim just falling into line with the market place as a whole or to be more cynical ensuring extra sales of stagelines etc.

I think re change in including phono boards is due to several reasons:
Introduction of very good outboard phono stages (Tom Evans etc)
CD players becoming primary source and not owning a TT
More choice to the customer...
personally I can see why its gone this way...
Not saying I agree but it does assit me indirectly in that If I can't afford the phono stage etc its no great shakes as its now a case of just plugging one in rather than a dealer fit board...
